Still sounds like a fuel issue to me

Issue mostly sounds like a fuel issue. such as a possible filter problem. Have you checked filter or fuel lines? etc.
Didn't see any reply to discorevy's Q about removing the fuel return line ..

Another possible thing to check on for the OP, because it's a freebie! .. be double sure it's not the wiring at the ECU, both red and black plugs.
Whilst starting, move the wiring at the ECU a little, and see if that helps to start.
I remember brothers TD5 had a small issue with the wiring at the plugs .. a little flaky very occasionally. Re-did it when made up the twin battery bracket thingy for him.
so if the CPS could be causing the issue, it may not be the CPS unit itself, but maybe the wire not carrying the signal to the ECU reliably.

If you had a multimeter you could do a proper test, check continuity and/or resistance from CPS and specific pin at the ECU plug.

Two quick and easy freebie checks you could perform.
    1. Pull plug from bottom of filter, maybe give it a spray with whatever you have(WD/CRC/Contact cleaner/etc) replace, try start .. etc.
    2. jiggle ecu wiring (at the ECU), maybe even pull both plugs, and check wiring along the loom path, especially where it comes into close contact with body, metal, or any other potential wire destroying addendum! obviously looking closely at the wiring insulation for any dodgy bits and exposed copper and stuff like that.

other possible thing to check is to pull the fuel pump out and check for blocked internal filter, or possibly a split internal line.

All these discos are giving me a heart attack!

When my Td5 had poor starting and would sometimes just fade out the mechanic worked from the rear (cheaper end) to the front.
Fuel pump and filter including an updated seal
Fuel pump relay which showed signs of burning on the contacts
Ended up being injector seals &/or o-rings and all good from there.
