    AM/FM aerial upgrade

    Hi all,

I'm in the process of installing an external AM/FM aerial - has anyone installed a regular aftermarket telescopic model in either of the front mudguards?

I have fitted a helical AM/FM antenna by using a Z ( at right angles) shaped mount on the RH mudguard. I keep it low by hooking it into a Zip tie on the gutter above the drivers door.

Reception is MUCH better than the crap window aerial going from impossible to clear on 2GB at Avoca Beach.
I think Mobile 1 is now defunct but AFAIR I bought one sold by GME. They come in different lengths and AFAIR I bought the shorter one as my garage is low.
I also bought an Adjustable pivot mount which allows the antenna to be leaned back.

BTW I don't think you will be happy with the result of a telescopic antenna. A helical antenna with top or base load has a far longer wire length than a normal antenna.

Mobile one has been taken over by a mob called Rojone.
I am on my third helical whip from them 1.5 metre long. Mine are mounted at the base of the windscreen and I bend it over and hook it under a gutter clip when in town or putting it in the shed. The last two ended up breaking at the top of the base, the fibreglass is two skinny, needs to be thicker there with the taper later. I paid for a light duty coil spring with the last one but it didnt arrive.
    Antenna $22
    Spring $36
    Freight $45
They have to come by courier they said as too long.
    Good AM reception though.

    I fitted a DAB+ radio to my D1 when I got it.
used the supplied 'power' antenna that came with the Pioneer radio, but was carp!

Got a Mobile One bull bar mount aerial soon after. Not quite as good quality as the larger GME UHF aerial, but has survived the bush pushing that is has to cope with.
Set right next to the GME aerial.

I get DAB reception right up to about Ballarat, with a few drops in reception in the dips, once closer into Ballarat tho it's gone( I usually use ABC Melb .. the popular FM stations, on DAB are usually stronger).
Up north, I get to Sunbury, over the final hill into Gisborne, and gone. No DAB stations in the bush(pity, they really should get relays going out there too).

I got my Mobile One prior to their sale to Rojone.

All these discos are giving me a heart attack!

    AM/FM aerial upgrade

    Thanks for the replies,
Last year I did purchase a Mobile One Am/Fm aerial. I got the M3M 840mm long one with base and an angled Commodore Zed bracket however I not keen on that type of mounting solution where the coax termination and HF base are exposed to the weather so I am not keen to install it. The GME UHF base is better as far as coax termination goes but the coax is the wrong impedance and will attenuate the AM signal. Now thinking of a heavy duty mount for the bull bar for a HF stainless steel whip that I’ve had for years and sell the M3W.

Amazing to find this thread. I have just walked in from fitting my aerial.
I last week fitted a pair of facelift lights and bumper to my 1999 TD5
The old configuration had an A bar with super Oscars and uhf and this little 300 mm s/s antenna with a twisty centre load thingy. I am not now, at this time refitting the bar.
This morning I bought a GME antenna base which I screwed into the bonnet gutter up near the A pillar.
I ran the coax/ antenna wire through inside the door and it sits happily into the rubber door seal. reception is very good.
This keeps clearance problems at bay too.
If I knew how to post pics I would but I don't know how.
    Regards Nick.

Heavy duty base with a 5/16 inch male adaptor to attach the aerial to are now in place on my bull bar leaving only the 75ohm coax to have a PL259 plug attached and be run to the radio.

    AM/FM aerial upgrade

The aerial install is complete and for the last 2 evenings I have re-visited my childhood hobby of Broadcast Band DXing. The original Eurovox 5880 head unit in my D2 has surprising AM sensitivity and the whole band width was full of the chatter of distant stations. Tonight I dwelled for a while on 1305Khz ABC Condobolin with good signal strength and comfortable listening all way down here in South Gippsland.

Yep, getting more and more difficult to source a media unit with decent AM. I'm still looking.
