    Nearly there.
Fan, exhaust manifolds and air intake left to go.

Cylinder sleeve failure or something else?

Can anyone tell me what the final torque on exhaust manifold to head bolts is. RAVE says 15 then 36Nm in the repair section, 55Nm in the Torque Wrench Settings list.

Maybe RAVE is unsure of itself?
In my copy of RAVE, it says 38Nm in the exhaust/manifold repair section, and 55Nm in the torque settings section.

Mate I think I did the lesser and then had to go higher when bolts backed off later...from memory I cranked them up. Cheers

They’re high tensile bolts so should be okay to bump them up to 55.
Anyway, motor’s running pretty nice. Pity my PAS pump’s not working however. Do you have to prime these things from empty or are they self priming. I needed to pull this one out as it was leaking. New gasket in and now it doesn’t work. Oh well, nearly a successful weekend’s work.

Hmm,, I always thought just working the wheel side to side primed it,, ?

I had a good read through RAVE last night and found a priming procedure. There's a bleed screw on top of the steering box to get the air out. Will give that a try tonight.

I have a vague recollection that with a new box(at least) you filled the reservoir, let gravity do it's job, then once the reservoir takes no more, to get all air out as the final step you have the engine running, and get someone to hold the steering at full lock(no more than 30sec) and release the bleed screw on the steering box. Kind'a like doing brakes. full lock puts the hydraulics under pressure. do the same from one lock to the other.
But that was only for a new box install.
I put a new stg box on my RRC and later my dads cruiser, but that was a long time ago

I did both my V8 D2 and D1 Tdi, about a year ago with new pumps, and just filled it as per normal .... wait, filled again .. etc.
No bleeding, no nothing .... no problems from either
The reservoir is so much higher than rest of the components, that you don't need to bleed it except for a stg box install.

Thanks AK, I gave the system a bit of a bleed and the pump seems to do a bit, as the oil will come out of the bleed tube at a height higher than the reservoir. Whether it is at high pressure though, is difficult to tell.
Anyway, l took the car for its first spin tonight and although it was hard to steer at full turn, it was fine for normal driving. I think I will put it on the axle stands and give it another good bleeding before replacing the pump.
The extra 0.6l engine capacity is very noticeable. I think I’m going to enjoy this. Cylinder sleeve failure or something else?
