Its not that the LT230 is weak, its just more convienience.

In a patrol with an LS, you are just driving the rear on road, but it does have an LSD. So you not getting the front and rear drive benifit.

Agree with fitting the biggest nissan diffs if running very big power and over 35+ tyres on a Rover, you loose diff clearance, so you need 37s [emoji6]

You can keep it rover front and keep your clearance, LRA do a rover9 for rear also.

I have a low pinion rover9, comp arb locker,35spline hitough & and 10 bolt flanged rear.
Up front, Rover pegged Ashcroft everything, 24spline hitough axles & 10bolt flanged

And the LT230 is a stronger t/case than the Nissota ones, except for the centre diff.
The ATB gives a big improvement in driveability on dirt, reduces the load on the TC in a D2 all round, dramatically reduces backlash and is a lot stronger than the stock diff.

Yes any improvement in backlash got to be a good thing..that gave me the willies with clunk. .clunk..all the time..never inspired confidence and just gave the jap guys more reason to point and stare at the disco as it clunked its way up the track!

Backing off a rock shelf would be the worse time with clunker clunker clunker as the drive train unwound..

Just my 2 cents for what its worth...

*Having the ATB in the centre diff does take out the "idiot I forgot to engage the centre diff lock" issue (no... I've never made that mistake, I'm that good) [tonguewink]
*It also takes up any wear as the box ages, less clunk clunk.
*Dont have to worry about them pesky side shims wearing out.
*Do I think its a must have, not really, more of a cool thing to have.

*Having a ATB in the rear and or front would be my pref on a Land Rover with traction control.

I've driven a few Defenders and Disco 2 models with a ATB fitted to the front. it does make the steering centre more than normal, some people like it others dont.

What Dazza said. More noticeable as you go up in engine torque. With the original 3.9 I barely noticed it. With the stroker fitted I learned (very) quickly to be respectful of it...

That is a bugger. I used to think rear locker and ATB in front to keep turning circle and reduce risk of front breakages.

Maybe I’m missing something about this silly I forgot to lock the diff thing. Who cares. If you forgot them a wheel spins and you then stop and lock it. The point of the the ATB Center diff other than strength is for situations that you don’t want to be locked. On the road on snow or high speed driving on dirt.
