Thread: Exhaust Whistle..??

A mechanic told me that sometimes a hard object can get through the air filter, ping into a turbo blade and leave a mark which causes a whistle. But that doesn't seem to be the cause of the whistle on my Puma Defender.

Yeah Rick, I am deaf at high frequencies but even with my hearing aids in I cannot hear a whistle from my turbo.

This was the same with cat and stock muffler and now with no cat and Flowmaster Super 50 lightly baffled muffler.

BTW turbos will whistle if the centre bearing is damaged by a "cook off" . I have had 3 petrol turbo cars and two had turbo problems caused by coking in the old days before oils were so good.

I get a slight whistle at idle with only having the rear muffler in place. Ive always wanted a louder whistle, just because i think it sounds awesome. Ive put it down to just different turbos make different volume whistles. Maybe its going to do with bearing types, no idea.

    Hi singlecell,
Is your rear Muffler the factory one, or aftermarket?
Does it 'drone' on the Highway with only the rear muffler? Not too loud?

Rear muffler is stock. Car sounds great. No drone on the highway. Ive heard them with the muffler removed and its not something I would want to be driving around in too much.

Rear Resonator may be the issue ???

I have recently replaced the center muffler delete on my d2 td5 10p (no cat), there is close to zero whistle at idle. As soon as i remove the rear muffler (resonator) it sound fantastic (lots of whistle) (the resonator basically kills all turbo sound). --> i have ruled out any leaks in the systems too, i have also swapped the rear muffler over, to one from a 2001 td5 d2, but still no difference in sound.

I have begun to assume that not all rear mufflers are the same on the d2's ??
respectively, I believe this is why it i cannot hear the turbo. ?!?

What i cannot understand is why td5's with a center muffler delete (but still the rear resonator) sound different. This is the case for my Td5 110 defender and my Td5 d2 - they sound complete different though have exactly the same exhaust system (disregarding the length and bends in the pipe of coarse)

Both the resonators on my d2's have the landrover logo it, as well as 'ARVIN' on it (whether this is the stock resonator... I dont know)
I was particularity disappointed after hearing what it sound like on my d2 comparing it to the defender. --> I think the sound the turbo makes is really cool.

Not sure if this is the case for others??
would like to know what people think.

    Cheers - Ollie T
