    Cranks without starting

Hi guys, I'm running out of time as my td5 is going on a week's trip next Friday, the thing will crank really strongly but struggles to start, this only happens randomly, sometimes the morning sometimes after is been driven for a while. The battery and altermater are fine, I've fitted a new fuel filter and housing with all the valves, and had someone change the pump. Thought all was good, but it's back.
Don't have time to take it back to the garage, so suggestions from you guys as what it could be would be appreciated.
    TIA

Thanks, but when I phoned the garage up who swapped the pump, I suggested it could be that and they said if that was the case the old pump would have black residue on it and it was clean. I can get a crank angle sensor on Monday and fit it, but only an aftermarket one. Do you think I should still do the injector washers?

If it happens only very occasionally and randomly it might just be the security electrical quirk. This is overcome by just removing the key from the ignition, locking and then unlocking the car with the fob. You can stay in the drivers seat. My car does this very occasionally.

    My bet is injector washers.
    Sounds like when mine went.
I think the black residue is only in extreme cases, although I haven't checked mine since the long range tank installation.
Every now and then mine would crank and crank then after say 30 seconds to a minute start on a couple of cylinders and progressively add more. Perfect since replacement of injector washers and orings.

It also refuses to start every now and then (very rarely) at the local supermarket which I put down to the Chemist shop doors. Then a reboot by locking then unlocking fixes it. My active immobilization is disconnected. The difference is it starts on all cylinders straight away.

With the ignition on can you hear the fuel pump working?
It could be dirty contacts in the inertia switch cutting the fuel pump out on start up.

That does seem to sound like the issue, it appears to catch on a couple of cylinders and then comes alive. I'm not sure I've got time to do the washers before I go. It happens every now and then but it always starts eventually. I'll pm Dazza see if he has time, don't really want to go back to the garage, I explained to them I needed it sorted for a trip, and said they would pressure test it, but I wish they had tested it tested after they put the new pump in.

Pressure testing the fuel supply lines will not show an injector washer leak.
If you suspect the washers are leaking I'd recommend changing them before your trip, if they leak diesel and it mixes with the engine oil it can create a "run away" destroying the engine.
