    Turbo boost.

Ozscott, Pedro and the rest of you petrolheads, talk amongst yourselves for o couple of minutes.

How much boost can a Td5 accept whilst remaining reliable?

Turbo boost. Don't know the answer to that Ian, but I am enjoying the tdi...

Funnily enough I spoke to a tdi tuner today and he reckons the Trito runs 25psi and some places go 35psi and they break turbo spindles at that boost. He prefers fueling and timing changes. But as for td5 not sure. I recall they were a very unstressed and low boost compared to others.

    Cheers

Andrew, have you spoken to Blknight? He reckons he can match the Rover V8 power with a tdi, but you do need to monitor the egt.

No I haven't Ian. There was another bloke on here a while ago boosting his TD5 Disco like there was no tomorrow. He posted up videos and it was quick.

    Cheers

I'm pretty sure Dave HAS matched the Rover V8 power with his old testbed Tdi....

My one is currently running 23 psi with hybrid turbo, larger intercooler, remap and muffler delete. Goes Very good for a motor with over 365,000 km on it. Turbo boost.

If you're talking standard , it'll take a bit over 20 psi before limp mode.
If you fit a boost box or remap to take higher boost but still stock turbo , around 22 psi is ok .
any higher and the compressor map is wrong and all you are doing is creating heat without flow.
Hybrid turbo, bigger , more efficient intercooler, match port of head etc, with remap to suit , 26 psi with the right turbo is ok as long as the flow is there and the boosted air is cooled.
All this is still very reliable as long as you have a strong enough intercooler and hoses. Boost is just air so on its own won't do harm to a diesel, especially TD5 as they are a seriously tough unit.
My own has been tortured with those numbers for a very long time , uses no notable oil between services , has no blow by and still does sub 10 second 0-100 .
Might be more than you were asking

... my “tweaked” TD5 has been running “reliably” for well over 100,000km. I’m running an early “chipped” ECU, plus a BAS boost box and all with standard turbo, intercooler, and hoses. Peak boost for me is set to 28psi (VDO gauge pressure) and is achieved with a Manual Boost T, rather than fiddling with the waste gate adjustment, the final tweak was a WGM bypass. For the boost signal hose connection I drilled the inlet manifold. This is all “old school” and there are more refined ways to achieve the same result if I were to do it nowadays.
