Ignition electrics problem on D2 Td5

    Your mod sounds good PhilipA.

Plenty of other and similar ways found also....

Davis Performance also sell a modified harness that sounds like it achieves the same solution.

When you clean the plugs with contact cleaner remove the gaskets first or they swell up and become useless.
    Ask me how I know!

Because you've now moved the wiring harness and the ECU, may also pay to be sure, to be sure ... pull apart again and also inspect the harness going too the ECU for possible chafing and wear.
Not particularly difficult to do, and just needs some care not to overstress the wiring. It's old and brittle now.
But if the dash lights are now going out after a start, by having disturbed the wiring harness in checking the ECU, you may now have replaced it all into a different position and it's not possibly fusing in some weird way.

High probability that the wiring loom is perfectly ok(other than age hardness) .. but it'd be better to be sure too.
