    D2 centre muffler removal

had a Stage 2 ECU upgrade done years ago to my 2001 TD5 Disco 2 (EU3) upgraded the intercooler but never worried about removing the centre muffler.

recently a new rumbling noise has become evident ... only between 1850 -1950rpm which, annoyingly, also just happens to be at the speed I tow my van at.
I've unsuccessfully searched for the source of this rumbling noise and now of the view that it's possibly a loose baffle in the centre muffler. (resonating)
Just wondering from any members who have had the centre muffler removed following an ecu upgrade ... two things:

    1. Did you notice any difference in performance once it was removed?

    2. Is there much difference in noise level inside the vehicle with this muffler removed?
I do a lot of long distance towing and the last thing I need is a loud constant droning noise.

Am I better off just replacing the muffler instead of the straight through mod.

There seems to be a consensus that the droning at lower revs will be excessive with the muffler removed.

I replaced mine with a lightly baffled Flowmaster 44? with offset front and rear pipes , which fits very neatly .
The rear resonator is straight through anyway.
    Virtually no drone while towing.
While you will not see much extra performance the EGTs will be lower.

sounds like a good solution Phillip.
I also like the possibility of the EGT being lower as it's always been a bit high for my liking.

If you want noticeable difference fit a de-cat downpipe

    cat on a D2 TD5?

Just checking Td5 D2's do have a cat unit up front before the Centre muffler?
Mine doesn't have one (and I am not looking to install one, even a De-cat), but was curious as to whether they were origionally there?
(I thought that D2 Td5's all had them?)

I'm also looking to remove centre muffler and look for a bigger/cooler intercooler.

    EU3 engines have the cat.

They also have a restrictive bellows rather than a braided flex just below the dump, (compared to pre-02 cars) as well as necking down to 60mm OD before the cat and muffler

I feel blessed I only have 2000 model, so that explains why I don't have a cat. ...but I don't have the late Td5 motor, so not sure if I have missed out on something.

Lol. That's funny.D2 centre muffler removal
Ya haven't missed out on anything. Apart from the extra effort removing a water cooled EGR system. Oh and some secret squirrel stuff that only us 16p people can speak of... I was of the opinion that it was only the V8 that had one fitted.
There not one on my EU3 TD5

To be perfectly honest, I think the EU3 engines were a little bit more fuel efficient, and can make a little bit more Torque as well, whether you would notice this or not is debatable, but they are definitely quite similar, EU3 is a dog when the MAF is stuffed, EU2 not really affected .

    Cheers
    James
