How to reduce TD5 injector noise in AM reception

I have a Pioneer head unit in my D2.

Several months ago I fitted an external antenna to improve reception around the Central Coast and reception was improved greatly.
Reception on FM is perfect. The external helical wound antenna is on the RH mudguard . I have checked the earth and added another .

A few weeks ago I changed my voltage sensitive relay (12.4 cutoff) for a constant duty solenoid because I eventually want to fit a lithium battery .
The solenoid is triggered from an unused fuse from the internal cabin fusebox.

I immediately experienced a variable with engine speed loud chirping sound when the signal is weak. When the signal is stronger the noise diminishes as one would expect.

My assumption is that it is injector noise.

So I placed a choke on the trigger wire and a 1.7Mfd capacitor on the trigger wire to no effect.

Now I know that the TD5 was rejected by the UK army because of unsolvable injector noise in their radio equipment But would be interested to know whether anyone has experienced this problem and fixed it.

Phillip, could you try a test wire from the Ciggie circuit or another circuit? Try piggy backing the ABS for the trigger or use a shielded wire for the trigger and earth at each end.

    Thanks Tombie,
I just had a read on fixing HF problems, but they may not work for AM .

I will try a different source for the trigger as currently it shares with my boost gauge which has a sender down near the ECU.
Amazing that no problem with a VSR but when a solenoid fitted it started.

As I understand it your mudguard is the AM/FM antenna ground plane... i would try improving the ground of that panel with a braided earth strap to the chassis . Also consider grounding the bonnet which might be collecting and re-radiating the injector (?) noise to the adjacent AM/FM antenna. Having said this the noise just might be entering the radio via the earth path - and then the issue becomes a lot messier.

    Bob,

Only started when he changed solenoid and trigger.
Will be induced via that interaction.

    He earthed the chassis/panel.
