Not looking good. Had a friend do a similar thing with a Volvo. He put dex 3 in it instead of the recommended type. He had the same outcome. After a mega flush it is working but don't know for how long.
Got these pics sent to me from a customer doing a trans service on a D2A he just bought with a auto problem
The D2 ZF requires Dextron III, some one however wanted to re invent the wheel and thought a Lifeguard 6/8/9 equivalent is better.
Needless to say the trans is not working too well. The fluid change revealed very black Trans Fluid and lots of debris inside.
Have a look at the filter, then after 10 litres of flushing it is still got black oil.

Even Penrite do no list this oil for the D2

It doesn't leak oil, Its sweating power
So did you use the Penrite trans fluid?
I've brought some after a Repco guy did a search on their system.
I've got my own issues after removing the trans sump to reveal the uptake pipe had burst and lots of shards in the bottom.
Penrite do make a synthetic trans oil suitable for the D2, but the problem is people do not read the fine print on the bottle.
it must be dextron 3, 4 equivalent. this is the one penrite have on thier web lube guide.
Totally different wording.
as for the repco staff, I wouldn't take everything as gospel, you can get experienced staff and then the casuals, I have walked out a couple of times when they tried to sell me something that was not suitable.
Both Below say Multi Vehicle, but Specs are different
This one is recommended by penrite

Thanks for the info. This is what the dude sold me so happy days.
Bit of crud there even with a good flush there is a good chance that it has made its way into the control valve bank this does have moving parts with a tight tolerance, also would be willing to bet the oil pump has been starved of oil and cavition has been going on so more than likely worn and with the filter blocked like this temps tend to rise the faster you go.

detriot locker, lsd front,C.D.L kit, chipped and bigger intercooler,2" lift, rock sliders, lsd in transfer case, modified auto trans.

Looking to change oil in trans on D2, but do not know what oil was used on last trans service.
Service person recommends Penrite (which I use anyway), and tells me any DX111 compatible oil.
However, there are a couple of Penrite DX111 rated oils, one being mineral, another semi synthetic and a fully synthetic.
Even dropping the sump and changing filter will only remove about half the oil, so whatever is already in the trans will have to be compatible with whatever I put in.
I plan to do service and change at least half the oil, do 500k's and then drop and drain again, and top up again with new oil, hoping to effect at least most of the trans oil being changed over.
My concern is, since I don't know what is in the box (mineral, semi or fully synthetic), what problems might there be if I put in a DX111 compatible oil that doesn't match what is in there?
Is there likely to be any conflict between mineral oil and semi or fully synthetic oil? (DX111 rated)
any of the penrite dx111 compatible oils are miscible , If you are going to flush x3 you might as well change to the atf-fs ( full synthetic) as it works very well in the zf 4hp boxes
To me you cannot beat Castrol Transmax Z.
It is on the ZF list of approved fluids published by ZF and AFAIK Penrite is not.
It is expensive but so are transmissions, and its cheap compared to ZF 6 at about 90+ for 4 litres.
2 changes will give 75/80%.
