    Td5 auto questions

Now that I've got my greasy hands on a D2 Td5 Auto I have a couple of questions.
TC lockup speeds. I know that in 4th it locks up at a little bit over 80kph. What's the lockup speed in 3rd and does it lockup in 2nd or even 1st and if so at what speed ? At what speeds does it unlock or is that more of a throttle position thing ?

The gearbox has been pronounced sound in wind and limb by a reputable auto trans specialist who's very familiar with D2's but it seems to operate strangely, to me anyway. When accelerating up to speed it seems to like being at around 2500 - 3000rpm with the gearbox sort of catching up which is quite unlike any other auto I've driven. I hasten to add my experience is limited to a few days over the last 45 years or so though.

I'm slowly coming to terms with driving an auto - really strange compared to my old manual...:-) It's a LOT quieter than the old 10p engined manual too.The only thing I have to do is to change the fuel pump (I have a nearly new and genuine one) because it sometimes sounds a bit like a cicada in the back. I also have to change the gasket between the manifold and the turbo - there's a bit of soot around one of the stud areas. No broken studs or anything though. Those two jobs should provide me with hours of amusement...:-)
    Cheers,
    Mark F...

Lock up in 4th is 80kmh.
    lockup in 3rd is 70kmh
    unlock in 4th 70 kmh
    unlock in 3rd 50 kmh

Tc stall is 3000rpm so that is why it feels different.

lockup speeds can be a little different depending on throttle position. There is a local hill near my place where lockup in 3 is less than 70 maybe even down to 60.
I have never been able to figure out exactly what the conditions for lower lock are.
no lock up in 2 or 1. When in low range if sport selected trans stays in selected gear.

Mine locks up in 3rd at 60 now. Part throttle, a little load and I mostly run in S mode
And they do lock up in 2nd.
Going up through the gears at full throttle it goes 1st, 2nd, lockup 2nd, 3rd, lockup 3rd, 4th, lockup 4th, and in the hills around here it will lockup up in 2nd once it's kicked back, too.

As said, in low range you can use manual mode, and in HDC mode it will lockup in 1st and 2nd at around the 1800-2000rpm mark once you get above HDC range.

Not so much of the old, please! Td5 auto questions

Only the second auto I've had, the first was an F100, 25 years ago.

The auto is damned good off road, though. Td5 auto questions

The td5 auto's use the box as a sort of wind-me-up thing,, when new you wouldnt have realised/heard it. They couldve used a better turbo and a gearbox that locksup,, but then nobody wouldve bought one!!

Standard torque converter stall speed is 2800 rpm , lock up is determined by load, throttle position, temp ( must be 59 degrees or above ) drive time, and revs.
Of the dozens I have driven , including my own , I have never had lock up in 2nd !.
Unlock with trailing throttle is governed by revs ( 1500 ), so if you want to keep it in lockup from say a 90 zone to a 70 zone , don't take your foot off the throttle, just ease it back so it doesn't come out of lock up, then gently accelerate back up to speed .
Not sure what you mean by " wind and limb"

I didn't think they locked up in 2nd but I've counted the changes and watched the tach like a hawk.

There is definite lock up in low range 1st and 2nd too when in manual mode at that 2000rpm spot, and it drops out under that and reverts to hill decent.

agree low range , but should only lock in manual mode 1st or 2nd with 0 throttle above 2000 rpm , was beginning to wonder if you had a compushift
