    Funny Set Up.

    20200409_115842.jpg

My D2 has a second battery, this battery is located behind the drivers side rear wheel arch, it seems to only be connected to the Anderson plug.
As far as I can tell it does nothing else?
Behind the main battery under the bonnet) in the place where the jack usually goes is this set up in the picture.
I assume this has something to do with charging the second battery? But don't really know what all this stuff & wires are for. It seems like a lot of kit just to charge the second battery.
Can anybody give me an idea of what all this stuff does? Should/does it do more than just charge the second battery? Do I, sometime, get an auto sparky to have look & see if we can simplify the set up or at least make it so I can start of the second battery?
    Best pic I could get.

Did the car have a winch at any stage that you know of. ? looks like a lot of heavy gauge positive leads for just charging a second battery.

About all i can suggest is you try and follow the leads and see where they all go. Is the 2nd battery in the box inside the luggage compartment or ctually behind the wheel arch... havent had a D2 for a few years but i never heard of putting a battery there.

REDARC system will be something like Tim's Traxide which protects your starter battery from going flat, and also recharges a partially flat starter before charging the second. Others will know more about the REDARC system.

As a starting point, put a multimeter on each battery after a good run and then a couple of hours settlement to check the voltages.

The second battery is behind the wheel arch under the car.
There is a alloy plate behind the wheel, screwed to the inner arch, to stop stones & mud hitting the battery.
The stuff in the Jack Space seems to have relays, solenoids etc. But the big silver thing at the front has connectors with plugs with heaps of wires going in. The wires are small/light so I think that the silver box thing is different to just a duel battery set up?
I'm a mediocre mechanic & certainly no auto sparky but I would like to know what all this does, or is supposed to do. I wonder if the silver box could be an amplifier?
I'm washing & checking the D2 over tomorrow so I will put it up on ramps & see if I can see where all these wires go, come from.

It was a common practice although I preferred my empty SLS compressor tray.

Perhaps the Anderson plug was to charge a battery in a camper or caravan then the rear battery added later.

That’s a redarc dual battery isolator. It’s designed to stop the main battery from flattening after the key has been turned off. Without it the starting battery would go flat if you leave something (like a fridge) turned on.

The other 3 silver boxes are automatic resetting fuses. Without seeing your car in person it’s impossible to tell what the fuses power. My guess would be 1 for an electric brake controller (they should be wired with an auto resetting fuses instead of a blowing fuses. Spotlight and winch also maybe? You can trace the wires from the fuses to tell what they’re powering. They will have a feed wire from the battery and the other side will be going to whatever they’re powering.

Does that answer some of your question?

Is this what your confused about? That’s the ECU. It’s not related to the dual battery system.

    Engine ecu!
I thought that would be behind or on the fire wall.
    But that is that sorted.

No winch but spotlights & brake controller.
So, now I know what it all does.
I assumed the battery isolator, the front battery goes flat after standing for a couple of weeks, the rear doesn't.
I have ordered a new starting battery. I deal with Repco through the Roadhouse, bloke phoned me because he thought it was a very large battery.
I explained it was a Land Rover thing.

Thanks everyone for you sage input. To me it's just a mass of wires & boxes.
