I have done it with a Minihelic gauge to just before the air box and the pressure rise is basically zero. I have done it with both an RRC with petrol engine and snorkle and the D2 TD5 at 80KMH and high load up a hill.It would be interesting to have an air pressure meter in the lower half of the air box, then do a few runs with the snorkel inlet face forwards and then back wards. Mind you, at low range speeds, on the ganrly stuss the difference would be zero.
BUT what I am talking about is the vacuum effect of the engine demand for air at higher revs and load being inhibited by the length of the inlet tract .

Well I reckon it will be the same if not better than the many hundreds/thousands of RRCs and D1s that pull their air from behind the headlight.It never rains where you are?
I had a mate who went through a big puddle at 80Kmh is his RRC and hydrauliced the engine so it is a danger. That was a reason I put a snorkle on my RRC.
I think the route from the front via the holes in the grille, and down the side of the headlight, through and around the headlight can to the hole in the radiator support behind the headlight can will strip out most water.
Whether the velocity is enough to then wet the filter enough to be a problem is an open question. I have had witness crumpling on the filter media from water down the snorkle in the past.

Re snorkels, probably if long pipe and bends cause some pressure drop, this could be countered with one of the forward facing intakes on the top which would give ram effect from forward motion of the vehicle. For Australian conditions to me it seems air intake on Disco ! at least just in front left front wheel is idiotical considering dust there at times. Now have a snorkel on mine but earlier removed the first intake piece so air from inside front of engine compartment went straight into airbox. Then an extreme load situation and an additional thing wrong caused a problem of vehicle becoming gutless as if a fuel block. Did not immediately recognise the cause, which was lack of boost pressure in intake manifold from which there is a pipe to diaphragm on injector pump. Full boost is needed before it will deliver full fuel
I towed float with two horses to Omeo. On 30 km of the Great Alpine Road between Harrietville and Hotham village is climb of about 4,500 feet. Used low range all the way and Tdi300 motor often running around 3,500 revs pulling heavy load. This found another weakness. In past when cylinder head had been replaced, whoever did it did not tighten exhaust manifold bolts properly. Manifold gasket blew by No 1. Then some smoke from this was going into air intake. After a while air cleaner was covered in soot which restricted flow. It took me a while to think of this as a possible cause when vehicle was gutless on flat roads after coming down from Mt Hotham on way home. After I had managed to buy a fuel filter in Bright but fortunately before I resorted to fitting it. Instead, knocked soot out of air cleaner element and improvised regarding baffles to minimise more exhaust gas going in.
Just an update seeing I hadn't really had it on the highway since the cold air duct installed because of COVID 19.
It's hard to be concise because of temperature differences and the fact that I bought and fitted a set of 245 70r16 tyres rather than the 255 70r16s I had on it.
The air temperature was about 15C.
EGTs going south from Moonie Moonie bridge which is one of the steepest hills on the M1.
Maintaining 110Kmh up the hill EGTs at about 500 and boost at 22PSI.
Usually I had to ease off a bit as EGTs got to 700C , boost maybe 19lbs.
The car is much livelier over 3000RPM, and I hit the boost warning at 23PSI much sooner if accelerating.
I have the odd sensation when just tooling along with EGTs at 200 (lowest on gauge) and boost at 5Lbs which I cannot recall before.
While the highway is undulating and hard to really know EGTs at constant level speed my impression is about 300C vs nearer to 400C before .
It's hard to know what effects are real or imagined and what are down to conditions and the 2% tyre change , but my overall impression is . "boy is this thing going well"
