Not that I would want to.....
Anything a D3 can do, a D4 can do better. I'm thinking of getting one, in about 10 years.
I clearly didn't mention the obvious ones!
Some manufacturers do a better job of the figures advertised. Towing, why the big numbers aren’t the whole story
Triton's 900kg payload on top of 2985kg tow load is impressive. And it's advertised 3100kg load and how it is achieved with a solid load onboard is well done.
It's like clearance. A recent review by a well known 4wd Mag showed Triton advertised clearance was the real figure whereas most others was taken at an artificial high point and overall clearance was much lower (and lower than Triton funnily enough).
Cheers
I suspect the D2 has an issue with how much you can put on the rear axle when under dynamic loading, and the extra rear overhang and longer tow tongue don’t help. Especially as all the notes are about making sure the load in the vehicle is kept as far forward as possible - including no passengers in the 3rd row (where fitted).
Interestingly the P38 does not have any of these limits stated when at full GVM.
And by comparison, with the D3 when towing you can increase the GVM by 100kg (still limited by GCM and axle loads but nice to be able to discount the tow ball weight by 100kg).
So the solution with the D2 must be to put all the load at the back of the trailer......(I am kidding). [emoji848]
Have you checked the Gross Combination Mass. It is common that once you put 3500kg on any vehicle supposed to tow that amount, then subtract the weight of the vehicle, you end up with minimal payload capacity.
And of course, the opposite applies. Load up the vehicle and your tow capacity drops.
The supposed 3500kg that many vehicles offers is more about marketing than real world tow capacity.
Except in the case of the D2 where it apparently has two different GCM’s. One for when the GVM is at maximum capacity and another for when the trailer is at maximum weight.
The difference between the two scenarios is over 1t.
When towing 3.5t - with the D2 you are limited on the number of passengers and you can have no load placed in the rear compartment at all. Load up the car fully (which is maybe an extra 3-400kg on top of passengers) and the trailer maximum weight you can tow drops 1.5t.
Two words... ball weight
