There's not that many 4WD dyno's around. Couple that with the fact that most of the top end Td5 tuners are over in the UK so their tunes come in remotely and are adjusted by driving data collected through diagnostic devices like the Nanocom, rather than tuned on a dyno. The end result is lack of dyno results.

Alive Tuning in the UK have been putting some dyno results up on their Facebook page lately. Both before and afters so maybe check that out?

You might be able to find a member locally with one fitted who would take you for a drive.

I'll say it again, there is a large, and growing volume, of customers who've had issues with the Ashcroft Transmissions ATB including parts failure and not working effectively as they age. The Eaton Truetrac is available for cheaper locally and hasn't had any such negativity.

This site is so worthwhile, for the breadth of knowledge and the willingness to share, commendable!!!

So settled on the 4.37's for the diffs and purchased these along with the Auto TQ fitting kit from Ashcroft. The change of Transfer ratio (contemplated the 1.1) was discounted as for a reduction of approx 200 rpm @ 100 KPH I am thinking, that $750 odd is probably better put towards the Turbo replacement later. The saving between this and getting the re manufactured 4.0 V8 TQ from the states rather than England at just over $400 against over a $1.2K is the getting on for cost of a VNT as I see it.

Am i right though in thinking now reading about the VNT that even substituting the 2A inter-cooler (which I already have) is not enough and this cost has to be factored in as well to keep EGT's down? Not a rev head by any means as prefer to think I am sensible with a firm driving style.

Interesting thought went through my mind, is the head worth doing i.e. changing the dowels etc. as a precaution before a tune? Happy to wait and do the VNT later and just try the NNN upgrade with a tune first as to find worth in the VNT especially if it does require the impost of intercooler as well.

Found this Detroit Locker down here in Vic, seems very reasonably priced for a diff,

Differential, Eaton Detroit Locker, 24-Spline, Land Rover, 3.54:1 and Numerically Lower, Each

Now not even sure whether to worry about the ATB at the front now, do have the winch and combining TC with a locked rear and CDL, left foot braking... Initially was to have two ATB's...

Well all the best laid plans... Just got a great price on SH ARB rear airlocker, wasn't planning on going this way (hard to justify the cost especially now seeing the Eaton self locker price) but happy with the choice now. Just requires a compressor which at least can have the benefit of piped air for tyres.

I am right in believing that if, IF, an axle on the rear was to break, simply lock the diff and have three wheel drive? Obviously then on the road, unlock CDL and front wheel drive on the open road? Suppose put the saving of the front ATB into

Axles Hi-Tough Rear

and if people have good experiences with the Les Richmond axles in the rear, any breaks??

I wouldn't go with arb lockers I run Ashcroft for an reason, 4 of my mates d2s have their arb lockers leak due to the design and have to take them out to fix it plus the crown wheel can chew on the copper pipe and leak air as well

Pretty sure if you brake an axle and disengage CDL and Disengage Locker you will have no drive.

Either leave locker engage or leave CDL engaged to keep drive.

Re: lockers....ran ARB front and rear lockers in my last defer for 15 years, yep the old style and never had an issue.

Just about to purchase another ARB locker for my defer and expect to get the same reliability.

Can't offer any advice re the ARB locker .. other than brothers D2 has both fitted. I think they leak tho.
Every 30 sec or so the compressor activates for no reason .. other than they must have slight leaks.
One would have thought once locked, and no leaks, there's no reason for the compressor to activate again.

One tip tho, if you do fit compressor to TD5 D2 .. don't be tempted to fit it up in the empty space in front of the passengers firewall area! Turbo gets too hot.
This is where previous owner fitted brothers compressor. On a normal (say 20°C day) and with mild driving, the compressor recieves too much latent heat from the turbo area.
So when you try to use the compressor to inflate tyres it will only run for 30 sec or so and switch off due to thermal protection. Inflating tyres is a total PITA.
Works perfectly if cold tho.

Maxi Drive Hy-tuf axles are good, the only way to get substantially stronger would be a set of axles in 300M and they are $$.
PJ's in Towwomba make axles in 300M, (modified 4340) not sure if they still make Land Rover axles though?
Ashcroft use 4340 which has a higher uts than Hy-tuf but a lot comes down to the heat treatment and actual design, e.g. waisting, etc

I run my compressor in the spot on the firewall Neve had an issue with heat, run allisport manifold, td5inside hybrid turbo and 3inch exhaust so pumping out good heat, but the compressor should only come on once ever 30min to top up the locker's

Just on that, this the space for the second battery, is this also prone to heat degradation? Been thinking about a vent above the Turbo in the bonnet not sure if others have done it but to my way of thinking it could save a heat spike, if the fan is a blowing this may vent off a large degree of heat. On this was thinking putting some verticals on the heat shield or even modifying the heat shield to help vent the heat up and out.

Only ordered these on Saturday night and they and the V8 Torque Converter conversion kit arrived today.

They certainly appear well made and having a good hard look under lights, no burrs, perfect finish!

Oh hurry up and finish lockdown!!!!

Looks like the first available time to get out of Melbourne is going to be November sometime...or worse Christamas Day!
