in 12 years of D2 TD5 ownership the only time my low level alarm comes on is when there's been a leak so no it's not normal

I'd have to give that a third supporting vote as well.
Cheers

Thats pretty much what it is. It is a Redarc coolant sensor that I think measures current across two electrodes. The electrodes pretty much just look like 2 screws that go through the side of the tank and then have the wires run away from there. They're in the lower half of the tank. Just let me know if you'd like a picture. I've had the Redarc in for well over 12 years in the original coolant tank and it has never cracked, leaked or incorrectly buzzed before. The only thing with it, is that you must have coolant in the water as pure water (I'm on rain water) doesn't conduct enough and the Redarc thinks it has gone dry.
If you can find BMW E30, E36 coolant tank at a scrapyard it's perfect fit and has level sensor in it, all you need is a relay and a buzzer cos it's N/C contact, i connected mine to the water in fuel warning lamp circuit cos i dont have water sensor on the filter so when that warning comes on i know the tank gets empty.
Just so I get this straight, the entire BMW expansion tank fits and plumbs up ok??!!
If so, that's brilliant!
None of the aftermarket TD5 versions after safe, and Mario won't warrant the genuine one either.
Yes, it fits perfect, there is only small difference at the bottom(the middle one is BMW in the pic), even the cap fits on the D2 one and if you need a tank cap for the D2 better buy genuine BMW cap cos it's cheaper, p/n 17111742232 , the only inconvenience is that the float switch in it is N/C and opens when the level drops so a relay is needed as in the scheme or if you want to use the water in fuel warning the earth has to go through the relay's contact(30) and 87A spliced into the warning lamp's circuit where ever it suits you
PS the tank's p/n is 17111712641 and the sender 61318360855 or 61311378320 both are good
