But can't you get "smoke" put into your tune say from Td5inside

Second thought. Did you clean the MAP sensor when you changed the EGR. If the MAP sensor is blocked it may cause these symptoms.

Rich and black smoke usually mean that the engine is expecting more boost than is available.

I learned this while going up McLeod's Shute and a turbo pipe popped resulting in a dense cloud, orit could be an overly rich chip.

MAP sensor was filthy, so gave it a clean.
Good thought on the pulleys, I dropped the belt and checked but all seems fine. Everything turns either freely or with
    "normal" sort of resistance.

I haven't checked the turbo to intercooler hoses yet. They are silicon ones fitted by the previous owner so would be less than 5yo.
I'll probably leave them alone until I replace the radiator and pull the intercooler out at the same time for a good flush. I've got new ones here to fit if needed. The intercooler to manifold one is a brand new silicon one.

I think in general its running better than it ever has. The stalling issue hasn't gone away completely but has definitely improved.
Thinking I'll leave it alone now for a few days, try and put some k's on it and just see how it goes
