2004 Series 2 Classic TD5. Engine rebuild advice

Hi everyone. My dearest Disco overheated. It still starts well but emits white smoke and is quite lazy. I have a sad feeling I may need to rework this motor to get her up and running again. I am in Western Australia. Any constructive comments about what I can potentially do or should not? Do I need to bury this girl given I am in lover with her?

Start with unscrewing the oil cap with engine idling to see if you have excess blow by ( you should have none , or minimal pressure )
Is the white smoke at idle or under load ?
Does the smoke smell like diesel or oil burning ?
They are a seriously tough engine but a serious overheat usually can cause problems with head components and unusual for bottom end dramas ( this still depends on oil / filter changes and kilometres ).
    Why did it overheat ?
