Factory gauge? They all do that, until it's too late. Don't trust it.

I hate to be a pariah, but given my experience with mine and towing, I'd have that car down to a transmission place for a proper service.

    I killed mine:

I know the Snowy Mtn Highway and the Princess Highway pretty well and I think I would have gone back to Sydney via the Princess. For sure overall a lot more windy but other than Mt Ousley which is a straight climb you dont have those tight climbing bends going up Brown's Mountain but is a good drive once on top.

A nice read and thanks for sharing.

    It's a manual, John.

Reading this thread & looking at the pictures I have decided which of the 2 is the best looking car.
And it isn't the fat one!

So it is. I get a little fixated on this topic, Ian.

You made me thinking hard. LOL. I was thinking of selling the car and get something more power like a D3 manual or a Landcruiser 100 series TD, however everything i drive her I thought I will love her a bit longer

Now I'm looking to tune her first and see how she goes with my 3.5T dual hulls boat and trailer.

I have seen one D3 manual for sale in Australia, it was a UK import. Very rusty underneath.

Well, transmissions aside, mine is chipped. The old ECU, so it's hard chipped. But that car and trailer in the pic I posted to this thread would have been close to the 3.5, and the car hardly knew it was there. I still has SLS and it evened the load beautifully. I reckon D2s are great tow vehicles. And you have the newer ECU, so there are tunes that give heaps more power, and TD5s handle it well.
If it was mine, I'd consider getting a cooler for the gearbox. It's simple enough to do on a R380, and it doubles the oil capacity.
