It starts! What's the problem?![]()
To paraphrase John Lennon, Land Rovers are what happen to you while you're busy making other plans..
Pulled up this afternoon, went and did a few things for maybe an hour, came out, got in D2. Would the key turn? Would it bollocks. I hadn't planned on dismembering the ignition barrel this arvo, but needs must. I didn't record much of what I did, but I do have a few pics.
The barrel had some gouges, and a noticeable lip on those grooves.

Bit of a run with the Dremel smoothed it out. I left the gouges, didn't want to take out too much material.

The core with the key fully in, and then where it should go.

Reassembly was a pain until I realised that the key must be inserted to push the ball bearing out so the lock engages properly with the switch/steering lock mechanism. With out the key in place the lock core won't settle where it needs to and won't turn, even though it unlocks.
The M+S lights went out on the next try![]()

Before I had a Land Rover I did not have any torque wrenches. Now I have three.

One thing I did learn, lots of vids and tutes about this, they talk about stuck wafers and tapping with a hammer on the end of the key; I observed that there is no detent to prevent the key from being inserted too far. One of my pics shows this, and the wafers being extended to prevent the key from turning. Tapping the key would only make this worse. I wish i'd had a decent camera setup to show what I mean. I have a spare lock. It sticks as well. Maybe I'll do something with it for the Good Oil. D2s are all getting on.
