Almost all modern vehicles run the same set up of normalising the gauge.

One exception I have experience with is 307 HDi(about 05-ish model)
I much prefer this system -> knowing is better than not knowing !

Depends on the application.
307HDi is my dads, and every summer, without fail ... he asks me if I can look at the cooling system on the 307, it's always heating up and cooling down, and he worries about it.
He's not suffering from age related memory loss, not in a significant way .. just the expected small doses of forgetfulness.
But my reply is always the same, and he responds with Ahhh! that's right .. yeah, good system(accurate gauge) .. etc.
like a broken record .. every summer for the past 5 or so years!
IIRC, at least on the V8, Having had the ODBII dongle connected to read coolant temps, red light comes on when heat gets to 117°C(or thereabouts), so while it's hot, it's not head damaging hot for a short stint.
Arthur.
All these discos are giving me a heart attack!
