Thread: Cheap eBay TD5 oil coolers - anybody tried one?

My newly aquired disco was reasonably well looked after by it's previous diy owner. All except for his mistake of adding something that wasn't brake fluid to the brake fluid and his failure to understand that adding nothing but tap water to the cooling system went out of fashion in the 70's. On this latter point, after a couple of weeks of multiple flushing and running oxalic acid through the system, I've got it reasonably cleaned out of gunk and used correct stuff for the refill. However, I am thinking that it might be wise to swap out the oil cooler as a preemptive measure against it failing from corrosion.

I see a few of these cheapo $50 or so oil coolers direct from China and can't help wondering if these are the same ones that are in some the much higher priced kits? I'm a cheapskate, and my disco doesn't need the gold plated treatment as it's really just something to tinker on and take the grand kids bush bashing with, so I'm always on the lookout for a bargain but even so these kind of prices seem a bit too cheap. So with that in mind, I'd thought I'd ask if anyone has used one, or even held one in there hands and checked it out for quality they can express an opinion on?

It's a right pain of a job and requires a bunch of gaskets so it's not something you'll enjoy doing in 6 months if it does fail. Can't actually comment on quality tho. Iirc someone made a rig to pressure test their cooler and I'd be doing that before I installed a cheap one.
