    V8 LT230 into TD5 oil temp sensor.

According to RAVE, the V* TT230 for the D2 has an oil temp sensor. If the connection is there on a TD5, and this is plugged into the loom, will it show up if the temp gets too high?
Would it be possible to also include a temp gauge, and could this be calibrated?

The wiring is there and the sensor fitted to the V8 works as I fitted one to mine but the sensor is effectively an on/off switch for a specific temperature. It lights a red gear symbol in the top right of the instrument cluster IIRC.

Like Grtaeme said, temp switch is only on/off, and illuminates the same gear warning light that the trans switch illuminates too(on autos' at least, don't know manuals)

I was under the car last weekend and I'm sure I saw the switch for T/C there. I was looking into oil level in mine .. although there is a lot of stuff down there, so I could be confused.
But it'd make no sense to only fit them to the V8 and not the TD5's too.

    Tdi's have 'em.

Look for a brass switch on the passengers side of the T/C on the side of the T/C box, near the rear cover. It'll have either a black/green wire or all black (depending on year).

IIRC, didn't you enquire about or get yourself an extended sump for the T/C some time back?
If you did get one, they have a plug on them to fit a temp sender too.

IIRC the transfer case temp switch was fitted to all V8s and auto TD5s but not manual TD5s.

Yes and No - vehicle specs depended a lot on what country/region that the vehicles were sold. My 1999 build Td5 Auto didn’t have one - the loom connector is neatly tied up there out if the way though. I am about to start on a rebuild of my transfer case and for completeness I will include the temp sensor.

Is the temp sensor a simple switch, or a variable resistor type thing?

    simple switch.
It just comes on at some very high(145°C) temp and light comes on.

Dunno if you could find one, but IIRC, the thread is quite large(maybe M12 or larger), so if you could find an adapter to fit into the box that has, say a 1/8NPT type internal thread, you could possibly do a gauge on it. But it is high up on the side of the box and from the look of it, not really in the thick of the oil bath. At a guess, it looks roughly in line with the level of the top up plug.

If no one else can verify soon, I'm going to bring mine in to the shed tomorrow(yay! day off .. ) and check other stuff, so should be able to confirm.
(ps. I just hope I'm not confusing my D1 with the D2 with respect to this info too .. )

Yep! they’re available for IIRC about $75 genuine and $45 aftermarket. Thread is M22 from memory. It is primarily intended to warn of high transfer case temperature and not specifically oil temperature BUT in actuality due to heat soak one would be pretty much consistent with the other anyway.

Yeah ... similar sensor type to the Auto trans sensor on the D1 .. difference is the temperature value when it turns on.

On my D1, I had an issue a few years back when the trans temp warning light came on when up in the high country.
Luckily I had the IR temp gun in the tool box to check temps. it was carried to confirm the temps of the engine/head/coolant etc .. in my early D1 tdi days.

When the light came on, immediately stopped, checked trans fluid level .. yay for dipsticks ... all good.
So got under the car thinking sensor was on auto(but it's up at the cooler end, hidden neatly) to make sure no fused wires ... and could only find a sensor on the side of the TC.
Touched trans body, and was hot to touch .. eg. like heating milk for a latte(which I used to do regularly), but not in the 100_ degree range!
ie. about 70-ish degrees, and IR gun confirmed it in the mid to low 70's .. so after much faffing about I just had to live with it and drive the 300klms home with the worry that the trans or TC may blow up at any moment.

Light came on and off intermittently and back home started searching for more info.
Next day on a very cold morning ... ign on and trans temp warning light still on! So I was pretty sure that the sensor switch thingo was playing up.
Both the auto trans over temp and TC temp switches operate the same warning light
