Thread: Finding new shock absorbers for the D2

Hi,

I have some standard height as new Koni front shocks I’m not using, if you find some rears elsewhere?

These would be ideal for a light/ medium loaded vehicle.

It might be a road runner, but high quality dampers such as Bilstein or Koni are better in that application as well, both for ride and longevity. The only reason not to go that way is $$$$

Agree Billies are a great unit.
OME ride nice too, have a comfort or sport option and work very well.

Koni - well - had them on a vehicle once - binned them!

Funny that, i've had much better experience with Koni over Billies. Each to their own I guess

It is all subjective for sure.

We found the ride so bad, couldn’t swap them out fast enough.

I know others who dislike the damping of Billies.

There are usually 2 types of damping with Bilstein Comfort and Sport
I had them on my RRC and when I bought them, Graeme Cooper told me to go for comfort as the sport were too stiff for corrugations and would Jack Up.
I did get comfort and never regretted it.

The only thing with Bilstein is that if the outer tube gets dented by a rock , the shock is destroyed as they are single wall. I lost one and then made up mesh guards.

I have Monroe gas magnums on my D2 at present and am very happy. They used to make the OMEs but then OME went to cheaper COFAP shocks.( I will probably buy them again, as they survived the GRR no problem. Got a bit hot )

I had Konis on my camper trailer and I went to get them rebuilt as they advertise but no go as the foot valve was damaged. I had Konis on a Nissan Patrol once and they were great if expensive.

IMHO , I only buy shocks with owners name on them such as Bilstein, Koni, Monroe, KYB, or Boge.

Most of the rest on the market are rebranded COFAP Brazil, or Chinese with a paint job.

So far so good on my 994/995 versions of the Bilsteins on the D2.

But for another opinion .. OME have been rubbish on this D2 since the bro bought it 5 years ago.
He hates to spend money on quality parts .. he prefers to waste money on useless junk he ends up getting rid of instead .. so we've had arguments over where better to spend his $$'s.
He refused to spend money on shocks and springs on this D2.

I don't have that kind of tolerance tho, and one of the first things I had to do properly on this D2 .. now mine.

I remember how harsh his D2 was compared to my D1, and my D1 wasn't ideal either.

But now with Billies(first) then springs .. D2 is a lot better(not ideal) but better than OMEs.

This is all factoring in my still unresolved weird suspension issue .. seems like a worn watts link, but I can't find anything wrong with it .. barely any movement in the bushes.
I'm going to replace it with my spare just to see if any difference is found, and if so, will then repair with new bushes(or replace).

I'd say for the OP, if waiting for Bilsteins to come in stock takes too long .. I doubt you will regret a set of std shocks .. and taking into account the half decent price point for them may even be the better value for money choice too.

std steering damper works fine .. I have one in my D2.

I'm my experience.. Which is subjective to a lot of things of course, I've found that genuine are probably a good/the best balance of everything, which makes sense I guess, no one ever questions LR suspension.
