Thread: re-shimmed air con clutch

Repaired my air con clutch for $0 dollars, with the hot and humid days wanted to get the air con going after getting the gas topped up still no go, power going in, circuit in clutch winding's fine, when I pushed the front of it in it would go in and hold once switched off no good again.

undone the centre bolt and removed the hub it is an easy job cleaned it all up and removed the small washer in the center of the spline, did try a slightly thinner washer but no good so removed it all together making sure it is not partially binding or rubbing on mating surface, all good now but slow to get cold so may still need a re-gas.

Saved a couple of hundred bucks on parts so that is a good thing have owned it since new so still original compressor.

I had my A/C clutch hub come off while driving…scarry, could have done some serious damage! Luckily it didn’t and it kindly deposited itself on top of the exhaust manifold sans centre bolt and shims. I found a Denso A/C compressor repair manual online which describes how to correctly shim and torque the clutch hub.

Thanks for that, also could use plastic gauge material to measure the air gap, was suprising how much crud was behind the plate cleaned that up 1st and tried it but did not work.

Might take of belt and check pulley bearing for noise and movement, has done over 300K but they are a heavy bearing design.
