    Trans cooler hoses

    Hi all.
I'm thinking of getting the local hydraulic folks to re do the swage fittings on my trans cooler hoses for peace of mind. As far as I'm aware they've never been done and its done 350000km. My question is.. Do the push fittings ever fail at the cooler or is it just the swage fittings the crap themselves?

Usually the push fittings onto the cooler that fail. Don’t touch or disturb them at all!

Found one of the swage fittings was ready to pop ((260K's) when I changed out the D2 cooler to the P38 cooler, fits with just a little piece of tee sheet metal modification, needed to go to screw on fittings for the cooler anyway so decided to take the whole cooler lines down there and get the fittings done 'properly' with no chance to fail again. The cooler it self was around $400 and the pipes around $300 though, so a pretty expensive exercise but one for at least of surety with upping the power / torque feel is justified.

So the push fittings fail as well. Good to know. The P38 cooler looks like a worthwhile upgrade. I think this is the way!

IMHO the main failure area is the swage on the hot side ie the LH one.
That is where mine deteriorated although it never failed, as I replaced the hoses with Land Rover Genuine as a precaution at 215KK.
I think when click fittings fail it is sometimes after the swages have been redone by a mechanic who doesn't know how the click fittings work and doesn't click them as they need quite a bit of effort.
My advice for what it is worth is to buy genuine LR hoses from a dealer or wherever. they cost $400 but you will pay quite a bit at a hose place. ( I found them only AFAIR $20 or so more than After market and there were no aftermarket available when I wanted them)
Be careful that the orings come out of the transmission with the pipe.

The fitting from pirtek to the auto cooler lines, bit more substantial...

Those Pirtek fittings look a lot better than standard. We have a Pirtek branch here in town. I'll have a chat to them.

Yes the original ones only last for about 20 years.

I hear what you're saying Phillip. It's a fair point but I think it will work out more cost effective to get the hoses re-done locally and ultimately end up with a stronger product for less money.
Just my thoughts.... Plus my Mrs keeps nagging me about getting a caravan which may or may not happen so maybe the P38 cooler upgrade would be a good idea while I'm at it.
