If there is any out of round issues then I would personally bore the motor as you have rightly said the margin of error is small the one thing I will say don't skimp on parts quality as cheap will come back to bite you.
Hi,
I'm currently rebuilding a TD5 engine for my 99 Discovery 2 (Original form).
The bores are standard and measure towards the limit of the acceptable wear range provided in RAVE (84.460 to 84.442mm).
What is more of concern to me is the half thou out-of-round over 84.46 in each of the bores and how this will effect blow-by if I just flexi hone and fit new rings?
I would be less concerned if this was a petrol engine but at 19.5:1 the margin for error obvious decreases. (plan to eventually upgrade the tune (ECU and Turbo)).
So should I rebore and go to +20 pistons and if so should I use OEM pistons or are the cheaper alternatives just as good (Are there brands I should avoid i.e. Britpart). Or should I not worry about the half thou out-of-round and just stay with the standard pistons which are in good condition?
Many thanks,
Simon

Can you measure the out of round with the head fitted and torqued down?
huh? why would you think you can do that? can you get your measuring tools and hands in the bores of a closed down engine?
Rebore.

Before I had a Land Rover I did not have any torque wrenches. Now I have three.

Many thanks for the feedback.
When the bores were measured we did use a heavy steel deck plate torqued down on the block. The deck plate has bore holes in it that replicate the bore hole positions in the block providing easy access to the top of the bores.
With your feedback and other reading I've done it looks like I need to bite the bullet and rebore to +20.
I've heard that there are a number of german and chinese manufactures that make the +20 pistons to suit. Obviously OEM are the most expensive but are they really necessay?
Does anyone have experience with any brands other than OEM please?
Its interesting that Turners Engineering in the UK list Kolben Schmidt as standard and then offer a cheaper 'Replacement' option which they list as 'not Britpart'.
Cheers,
Simon

Perfect circle pistons are good but don't know if they are made for td5 Chinese pistons are often of poor quality I would steer clear of them. If you can't get a good quality piston I would get in touch with Turners engineering in the UK see if they can supply pistons and rings.
Found the following reference to pistons made by German companies; suitable for the TD5 motor on a UK website. Only Nural and KolbenSchmidt list a standard and over size (+20) piston with Mahle listing only standard. Hope this helps.

Just curious..............
In those specs where do they mention oversize of 20 thou (assuming 'of an inch')?
