The electronics are excellent. All Bosch gear and most of it German Bosch and well done. The bits that hang off it are all very reliable. What let's them down is high running temps (easily fixed) and (and often from high running temps before the fix) cracks in heads or webbing between the pots. The often thin castings of the webbing is a problem but can be ameliorated by lowering running temps. It wouldn't be my first choice in reliable running to say 400,000 in V8 petrols but if I could get a low k 4.0 or 4.6 (thicker webbing) and get it sorted early with a top hose inline thermostat I wouldn't hesitate to purchase. Cheers

    Hello?

Is it me you're looking for?

I have 2 D2 V8s. One auto, one manual pet/gas. Auto has over 400k on the odo with original bottom end, just repaired top end at 398k. I like them, i ignore the fuel consumption.

I never had any real dramas with the 253, 308, 302, 351 or even the 318 V8's I have run, The 4.5l tojo I am running at the moment is also drama free.
    The 4l V8 in my D2a was a head ****

With high fuel prices since Russia went crazy, I'm betting most V8's are a little quieter at the moment.

Sorry for the late reply everyone! This is my beauty.

Done a few mods for touring with the family - Mainly spent my time so far on mechanical things ( I.E making it run cooler) and the rare oil leak or two (figured its just factory rust protection now) or the odd little electrical issue here or there.
Just clicked over 200XXXkms and rear suspension starting to sag so will be installing Bilstein/Dobinsons on 45mm Lift in the near future.

P.S Simon...... Beautiful Shed and beautiful property!.

    Me Too!
No V8 D2 now, but did have one in the Middle East from new and had no dramas.
Have had the following V8s: 59 Fairlane; 69 Falcon GT; 69 Valiant VIP; 81 Mercedes 380SEL; 95 D1 and the 2004 D2 - all good although some grief with the Merc - made the mistake of putting flushing oil through.
Still have the D1 with the grand total of about 55k km - if I can get the file loaded it shows the D1 going into a container in Dubai to bring back witth me.
The D1 has a mildly worked 4.6 manual and a point I would make about running temps is keeping the coolant flowing at idle and after shut down to prevent hotspots. A lot of desert driving in the UAE was at extreme temperatures (ambient) and waiting around in a convoy for people to be recovered worried me, so I fitted a Davies Craig electric water pump in the delivery hose from the radiator to supplement the mechanical pump and keep the water circulating after shut down.
Sorry, also not in Qld although my Dad was a copper there a long time ago! (1920s).
Now registered in WA - still LHD.

I have only a NSW registered late D2 V8. It is the loveliest thing to drive and tows the horse float and 2 ton trailer magnificently. Sounds lovely as well!!! Funny thing is that the only dramas I have had is with the Bosch sensors under the bonnet! Over a five year period the crank angle sensor, O2 sensors and just recently the MAF sensor all failed. The only one that caused a failure to proceed was the crank angle sensor, the others just caused the ECU to take a guess and lose a bit of performance and economy. My Nanocom makes life simpler! The only other thing was starter motor brushes and a blown top hose junction "T" piece. After market crap. I reinstalled the 18 year old original. No more drama! Some of the nearly 20 year old ABS black plastic trim bits are starting to crack and fall off the exterior and the interior is similar. It has had a hard life, but it drives so beautifully and I can't think of a better thing in my price rangethat could replace it.

I have owned 3 V8 Leyland P76's (2 autos and a manual), a late RRC 2 door, an early RRC 4 door (both '82 models) an '86 RRC EFI auto. I have a few 3.5 engines lying around plus a 4.6 and lots of V8 stuff in boxes and milk crates. I have only had V8 Rover/Leyland engined vehicles for the last 45 years so you could say I am a V8 fan!

I also have a thing for Series One Land Rovers, particularlty 80 inchers. Down to my last three, an 80 and two 107's

I have to say that of all the Land Rover products I had as demos in 12 years as a sales manager in a Land Rover dealership, D2 Discos were my favorites Sure, a $200k top spec Range Rovers were sweet things, but not 4 times as nice as a $50K Disco II and I felt a bit concerned serious off roading in a toy cost as much as a house at the time.

For running around town and dirt road commuting work, diesel Freelanders were great little cars, but I was always banging my head on the roof getting in and out of them. Visibility wasn't as good either. Enjoy what ever Land Rover you have or else you might have to drive something else. Perish the thought. Fancy having to drive Hilux every day! Safe driving . 5380
