OK new thread on DaDA M&S.

    Mate rang tonight.

Car stuck in Piermont with No starter motor activity and M&S lights. He is having it towed to The Central Coast. It came out of the blue, no prior misbehavior. Selector and dash agree in N and P.

This is an unusual combination AFAIK.
    Anyone had this combination?
He tried checking rear wiper and it works in reverse.
Disconnected battery for a few minutes -no change.

I will look at it tomorrow afternoon with my Nanocom.

My thought is wiring chafed at rear of console,
Maybe ign switch, maybe immobiliser, maybe red plug, .
I will just have to check em all.
    Regards PhilipA

OK went over to friend's place with nanocom.
I locked and unlocked several times then it started straight up much to my friend's fury.
    Scanned the codes
engine -air ambient temperature sensor , no big deal
    Auto P1843 CAN time out
ABS LH rear sensor low voltage.
It has been suggested that P1843 implies that the 1-2 shift solenoid is sticking . The trans has done 415KK and a couple of months ago he changed fluids and flushed for apparently the first time. He said it was full of black gunk.
    I advised against.

So what now? I reckon a second hand trans as a rebuild costs as much as the car is worth, but how do you know that the replacement trans is any good?

After 415K it is a Very old horse.
Maybe it needs to be retired and put to pasture

Thats why I'd rebuild. No point in putting something in that is possibly not a lot different to what came out. It is peace of mind.

I also think the value of the car isn't a limiting value for repairs. He may just like the car, want the car, need the car and requires it to be reliable despite its age and if he is happy with $5k to do that, then just do it. Resale value possibly isn't a factor for him right now.
    Cheers

At 415 thousand,.the auto may well need a rebuild, however that obviously isn't the issue here.

The Ambient temp code on the Nanocom may well be incorrect and can possibly ignored, if you provide the actual number I'll have a look at my notes.

The "can timeout " will be the source of the flashing m and s lights, this can be caused by a myriad of things from battery on the way out (the lights might abate after a secondary start for the day ) a wiring issue, extended cranking to start the car, or switching the ignition off and back on quickly and the sync between the ECU's is lost.

But it's probably not the solenoid.

My money is on a wiring issue or failing main battery.

    Cheers

    New battery
I have flagged that it could be a short at the back of the console.
It is up to him what he does from here.

As a new-ish subscriber, the abbreviations used can be somewhat confusing and not always sure if the letters mean someone is just joking around or whether they have a specific meaning related to the cars, especially if some letters are capitals mid sentence and others not... anyway, you get my drift. Sometimes one can spend an inordinate amount of time trying to find out just what they stand for. I'm slowly getting there... trial and error!
