Question 100kg Roof Top Tent on Gutter Rails

    Hi All,

My Wife and I are setting up the D2 for some longer distance touring and hoping to do the big lap over 6 months soon.
One of the requirements in the build is to have somewhere comfortable to sleep while keeping pack up time to a minimum.

We have been looking at Roof Top Tents (RTT) and The Bush Company have a solution which looks very attractive.
Instead of having a roof rack (up to 30kg) and then bolting on a RTT (~75kg), this becomes both.
Here is a video of one being fitted to a D2 via. gutter rails directly: YOUTUBE LINK
I understand on paper the D2 has 30kg off-road roof capacity although a lot of people (including myself) suspect this is referring to the stock roof racks.
We use the vehicle off-road but nothing too crazy. Get stuck enough to use the winch although this is no rock-crawler, it's a tourer.

My question is, can the gutter rails support 100kg RTT PLUS a batwing awning (~20kg)?
Keen to hear any experience others have had with a similar setup.

    Cheers,

    Rohaan

I like their solution, tho I will add you can mount most RTT's just on gutter mount cross rails (not as smick but cheaper). My longish term plan is getting a drifta RTT and modify the underside to do very similar to the bush company set up. Weight wise up top I've had the plastic kings (~60kg plus bedding and roofbars) rtt and even that is fairly noticeable off road.

When you say gutter mount cross rails - do you mean gutter mount roof racks?
Or is there a way to directly mount to the system under the RTT.

Yeah the weight is certainly a concern. Especially as i will be lifting it 2" and putting on 32s.

My car is the closest one, the bar's are very similar (just not quite as high) as the middle disco. It's still a separate setup but not as heavy as a full roof rack.

Nice set-up. I think this will be the route I go down as now I'm looking at a few other RTTs which are ~70-80kg although require cross bars

    Low mount roof rack

Kings Qwiky and Darche 270, the roof rack is low, not the standard size you normally see. Does fit over the standard roof bars but will probably remove these next time I take the tent off.

Had three bars to get the tent home and out on the tracks, told it was wobbling on those.

Does impact a little bit with the feeling off road, but the two inch or so reduction with the lowered roof rack can be felt as more stable. Maybe a long range fuel tank with an extra 50kgs of fuel sitting low would solve it!!

Much simpler than you would have ever thought!

Using wall brackets (got mine from bunnings) simply screwed them onto the rear door card and then the angles to the board and viola, shelf in seconds. Had to do a bit of cutting with the Subwoofer box which I wanted to keep with the Harmon Kardon system, but this is really only a half hour job at most and you don't lose the functionality of the door. It is also able to take into account the angle of the door when its open. The shelf fits neatly, well pretty much so, between the plastics of the lower interior - am going to put in some slides down lower to maintain location and stop it sliding around, but this when I put in the 125litre upright fridge as I had in my D1.

How do you find those roof racks? I've got the exact same - the wind noise is next level. Please tell me they quieten down when loaded with stuff.
    Please.

To be honest I have only had the rack with the RRT on so unladen I cannot compare. At a cruise it is more than reasonable and don't or haven't noticed it much at all. Comparable to the D2a with the short ARB rack at the back but I have other noises that certainly vie for my attention. The Darkside Manifold and exhaust with the Garrett VNT makes a bit of a racket when accelerating, not sure if its satisfying per se but this is more at front of the ear even when cruising.

As for the fridge, well the footprint is only around 50*50 cms and in the Discovery we have height but not a lot of depth in the rear tray. IF you look at the picture of the rear door open at the campsite, the 85litre fridge there takes up almost all the rear load space, much better to go vertical and 50% more capacity at a saving of $100's let alone the cost of the fridge slide as well...
