    V8 TCU in TD5

    Good day all.
I’ve seen quite a bit on here about this, but wanted to check in again as I’m considering such a change.
My TD5 has been mapped and running pretty well, but the late gear changes and lock-up is a pain. So trying to make that a tad better.
Anything to be done other than replace the TCU with a V8, then reset it with the Nanocom?
    Thanks!!

My suggestion after a brief dalliance with the V8 tcu (a few of them actually and money wasted, and as you will no doubt have read some are touchy on the kickdown) is to get the Ashcroft kit and fit a V8 torque converter.

The earlier upshifting is nice but the Td5 too slippery torque converter is the major issue in my (not so humble I have an ego) opinion.

My Td5 is mapped and intercooler. I find it drives a lot better in S mode.
    Cheers

Thanks, both, for the feedback. It's hard to justify the cost of the Ashcroft TC when the current one is going well. Or rather, going painfully well. :-)

Thus, I thought I'd check to see if TCU could be a silver bullet.

Will also try the "S" option again...

+1 for S mode only way to drive a mapped auto.

The V8 auto ECU, whilst a "straight swap" physically, requires a reasonable amount of mapping changes to the TD5 engine tune otherwise it will be horrible to drive.

    Quite nice once done though!

Are you using winols to see more mapping tables? I had a bit of a play in tunerpro but I achieved nothing playing around with the torque table. Mind you I am back to stock tune coz I was putting the foot down too much on the modded one .

I have also learn't to drive it better with the slippery converter so not rushing to put the lower stall TC in.

The kit was $380 landed, and I picked up a used torque converter for $100 , just lazy putting it in and also not done homework on whether to change block rear and transmission front input seals .

I rarely use Winols, at the moment anyway.

Winols is good though at a number of things that TunerPro can't do, such as searching the hex for specific things.

You need to learn how to read hexadecimal and ASCII.... It's fun!

Don't forget with the auto slipping, that there are a lot of things besides the converter that can be slipping, and if you're slipping with the converter locked, it'll make a mess of the rest of the box quickly.

    Cheers

Sorry I meant slippery as in high stall speed on the Td5 one, it's actually a good trans in my disco and no issues (auto wise) towing the big box furniture trailer to Melbourne and back.

The only time I had to deal with HEX was during my apprenticeship 40 years ago and we were learning it with programmable thumbwheel teaching gadgets. I really haven't got enough interest in tuning beyond what I have been able to do to get into it yet, but I have my rare moments when I put my mind to things.

It's a shame that with all the files available to get into the Bosch TCU of other vehicles there seems to be none for the Disco 2 TCU.

Still, locking the Td5 unit up earlier is nice around town and I think it was changing up earlier under light load, but it (V8 TCU) was too flighty when needing to put the foot down.
