    Heavy Steering

    Not the belt as the Nanocom has 13.8 to 14.0V at the battery when running, also alternator light is off when the car is running. Tyre pressures are good. Change the fluid?

    If you’re not seeing turbulence in the PAS tank, you’re probably looking at a new PAS pump. Change out the fluid while you’re at it.

    +1 on P/S pump.
    I'm very new to Disco's but learnt, in my first week of ownership, what the inside of a power steering pump looks like.
    The front bearing let go and my steering got heavy.
    Not being able to wait for a new pump to arrive, I rebuilt the original. Bearing cost $6. Seal $1. Gasket kit $40.
    The internals of the pump showed some damage/wear, but back together she went and she pumps and holds fluid.
    I now have working P/S, but heavy steering, at times.
    I am putting it down to efficiency of pump.
    New pump arrived today. I will fit it one day.

    I think my steering slowly got heavier. I've replaced the PAS pump for other reasons and the steering is still the same. I'm wondering if something also wears in the steering box. Mine has 294,000 km

    Most likely the pump is slowly dying, but....

    It could possibly be the lines too.
    I once had a car(rover) where I changed the p/s pump and the steering was still heavy.
    All joints were checked and fine too.
    One of the semi hard lines looked a bit sus, so out of fear of it causing a breakdown, I just wanted to replace it.

    Straight up, fixed the heavy steering.

    If it is a bit notchy as well as heavy it could be the knuckle at the bottom of the steering shaft. A good spray with crc or similar and leave overnight will free it up ,if that works then spray it with spray grease. On the 2a the shaft is split and you can also change the bottom bit if needed.
