    Good economy towing my Coromal 505Pioneer XC

    1F4BAF59-5C49-4699-8835-CFAC008EF743.jpgI have been on a trip to NQ for the last month or so in my 2002 TD5 auto
    I have calculated my fuel economy between fills and the average is around 13.5 l 100 km which I think is pretty bloody good.
    Its hard to tell exactly as I am obviously out and about about 10-15% of the ks. in addition as I have a 150l tank it depends if the fuel station is on a slope how many liters I can fill with say 5 clicks.
    I usually travel at about 95kmh .
    This latest fill I forgot to zero at the previous fill so had 936 ks up and adding it up it came to 12.8 l100 km.
    my van is a 2003 Coromal 505 Pioneer XC pop top off-road with a wheel weight of 1685kg plus about 175 on the drawbar.
    The van is higher than a normal Coromal as it has an extra row of cupboards. It is also fitted with 265 75R 16 Yokohama semi
    mud tyres .
    What a great old thing the D2 is even though it has the LR patented chassis protection system which also now applies to the van.

    I tow this Royal Flair full height 19 ft van 180 ball weight 2600 tare standard 90 litre tank TD5 manual with a small remap from Shack and I will get consistently 600kms per tank..slightly less with a headwind...I haven't worked out exact figures but am happy with consumption...and power🙂

    The manuals are always better on fuel from what I've seen.

    Recently we had a 110 on holiday, towed a heavy camper, did some 4wding and other messing around, and got a bit over 12 litres per hundred, I was quite surprised, I was expecting about 14.

    Towing a 2.6 tonne caravan and getting about 15 per hundred is quite good.

    3-ish tonnes behind most cars at the speed limit will see about 17 - 19 per hundred in my experience.

    The humble TD5 is still punching above it's weight!

    D2 TD5 are generally pretty good on fuel.
    I remember getting high 8’s in the last one we had,a D2a,not towing,but loaded,on run,back from a Cape trip.
    We were travelling just under the speed limit as we were stuck behind a number of vehicles towing large vans.

    Ours was virtually stock,5 seater,snorkle and bar.
    Certainly better fuel burn than I ever saw in the D4.
    And a larger tank,I could get over 90L in it when it was dead empty.
    Around 76L was the max I ever got into the D4 which was a PITA.

    The d2s are not at all bad on fuel, I've not worked mine out for a long time but it goes a long way on a tank. It gets all the way to Melbourne from home with 1/4 a tank leftwhen I've done that trip, and towing would be top up once. (Horse float)
    I appreciate how good it is with current prices but also because means more time between having to building my wheelchair to fuel up (I run out of puff doing the wheelchair build so fuel is one time I hate wasting the energy to just roll into the servo) so doing that errand less is nice

    If you don't like trucks, stop buying stuff.
