Thread: Rough idle - TD5 please help

    The timing setting on the Td5 is a very complex thing and not being perfect can cause all kind of trouble while the engine starts and runs almost like normal, in most cases when it's not done 100% as in the book and comes out perfect is IMO sustained by a big amount of luck. Some mechanics say it's easy, so did mine... i ended up with a destroyed engine after around 5K km of high consumption while the engine was running fine(so i thought), now after many hours spent studying the Td5 i'm 100% convinced that the timing was not perfect. Check out the timing setup procedure in the workshop manual and go from there

    I don't think you can put the carrier gear/flywheel on incorrectly, but as Sierrafery said, if you have had the head off, the cam timing will need resetting until it's spot on, near enough isn't good enough..
