SLS Issue

I have just got back from a trip that ended prematurely due to mechanical issues.

My most minor issue was that my RHR air bag would put car on bump stop (that side only) after about half an hour of stopping.

My two rear bags are almost new, replaced 6 months ago.

I got home late last night and this morning RHR again on bump stops. Moved the car(after it raised back up) and half an hour later it is on bump stop, RHS only.

The first thing I did was soapy water around top of bag to se if it was leakin at fitting. All good there.

I then put it on my two post hoist to check it out. Now I realise that with suspension hanging that it will think that it is too high and therefore empty the bags which will then have no pressure to try and find leak.

So to overcome this I disconnected the height sensors and moved them to make the car think that it was low.

I pulled off the compressor cover and sprayed soapy water on the connections. All good there. I then sprayed it all over the air bag in the off chance that I might have got a dud bag. again all good.

I then put the sensor arms back and put it on the ground to do soapy water with it on ground, to make sure it had full pressure in bag.

I have left it now for two hours and after just checking it is all good.

So can anyone enlighten me as what might be/have been the issue. I don't want to go away and have this happen again.

I have seen a height sensor fail, and they can be pretty random when they do... Temperature change might trigger it overnight as well.

When they fail they seem to drop the failed side on the bump stops when they play up.

Thanks for that. Overnight and it is still at normal height. Maybe another spare to throw in and if it happens again fit it and find out.

Are left and right the same. If it happens again a swap from left to right would soon prove if it was sensor

I think they are handed..

And you will most likely find that you will break the electrical connector trying to remove it, I always do!

You could try adjusting the ride height up a few mm, see if that makes any difference, which may if the sensor is what is causing the issues.

Edit: now I'm not sure they are handed!

perhaps put it in extended mode overnight.what happens is were the bag folds wears out first and developes pinholes at the folds that are closed up in use,extended mode will expose these pin hols and they will leak that is why you spray soapy water on them in extended mode.

You can (used to be able to) buy a new connector with wires about 150mm long, you would cut the old connector off, then solder and heat shrink the new one on.

The actual connectors I've broken were still sound, it's just the retaining part of them that broke, I just used really good quality zip tags around the whole thing on my work bus, it's been fine so far.

But you should really replace.

Google out YMQ503220, if it was a bad connection while driving you might need to recalibrate the system, anyway, dont work with those connectors without disconnecting the battery first cos if you unplug one(or both) with battery connected you'll definitely need calibration

Dave, check the airline to the bag, where it crosses over the fuel tank. I had one leak there, fixed it with a joiner but it seems to be leaking again, after 5~6 years.
I'm going to replace the line in its entirety and protect it with spiroduct or similar.

I would have thought that a hole in the air line would result in car on bump stop in 5 minutes, not half an hour, which was my case.

Having said that, since playing with my sensors, after 4 days it has not dropped.

So it would appear that there is no leak and that it has been the system deliberately lowering one side, suggesting to me that it would likely be sensor, as was suggested by another poster.
