    3.9 V8 petrol versus TD5

    hi all,

im currently facing a decision that i cant seem to make. after speaking with a colleague about it, he advised me to come this place for some advice.

i currently have a D1 3.9 v8. in immaculate condition. however i have the option to buy an equally good D2 TD5 from a family member who has looked after it really well.

apart from the vehicle being my daily driver, i plan to set it up for some touring up and down the east coast, maybe some mild tracks, but nothing serious off road.

before i sink funds into some extras like roof rack, dual battery, bull bar etc
    - which of these would make a better platform for my every day needs and weekends away?
    (reliability, economy, maintenance, engine mods)

your advice and help is greatly appreciated
    thanks in advance

D2. I've owned both, a 3.9 D1 and Td5 D2a. The diesel is markedly more economical to run and maintain.

Possibly even then. I'm currently driving a 2005 Ford, which by any metric is better on fuel than a 3.9 D1, but I'd rather be driving the D2 that is currently in many pieces.

EDIT Ford is a 4.0 Barra

    I have a D1 3.9V8 and a D2 Td5.

In my opinion the D2 Td5 is a no brainer for touring and daily driving. Although I love both, the D2 is a much better vehicle overall, it has a bigger boot and it has better driving range.

I reckon so Paul. I get just under 30mpg from the Td5, whereas 23mpg was the best I could achieve, at a steady 95~100kph, from the V8.

Have to agree with Slunnie and ,grr, Ian, especially if it's a D2A.

    thanks guys
    i appreciate the prompt responses.

i didnt know about the size differences, i always thought it was just a change in front and rear lights.

i suppose deep down i knew this was the case. maybe i am just too attached to my D1, but i suppose there is never a solution, only a trade off.

economy aside, would you say they are both equally as reliable, or does the TD5 win over the V8 here too?

Size difference is body only. Wheelbase is the same. It is a tough call. Both have pros and cons. TD5 is generally pretty robust and will do high Ks with proper maintenance. But the ancillaries can let them down. There are some known issues with them, more so the earlier ones .
I have a D2 TD5 and a D1 300TDi. There is little doubt which is better, but oddly I prefer the D1 to drive.

Although the Disco1 and 2 look the same, the D2 was a pretty major development on the D1. I've always been a fan of LR specialist mechanics also.

I think with both, you have to stay on top of the maintenance. I'd be inclined not to neglect any LandRover.
