    Still, could have been worse...

Brought the car home from where it's been hibernating to do a few things. Nasty vibration developed with backlash in the drivetrain.

    Timing is everything:

I knew it had been neglected but not this much. That shaft was ok when the trans went in... or was it. I doubt grease evaporates. I also doubt I would have got many more Ks before transmission catastrophe. I'm not surprised by the rust, given where it's been sitting.

    I assumed.... Don't.

Lucky that was all the damage. With mine, very similar but took the rear of the transmission out... Didn't snap the shaft but destroyed the trans

Not sure of your power mods etc but check Hardy Spicer for price on a greasable replacement, I was quoted around $500 for standard duty and about $850-900 for a HD type, sort of compares pretty well with what else is out there (also the Perth dept had 20 on the shelf!!)

    Cheers

    Try Jeep Connection in Hallam.

They are agents for Tom Woods shafts. I got mine through them.

You are very lucky. I have a friend who lives at Gove. He was on a trip to Melb when his let go just Nth of Alice.

Took his auto with it as well as all the wiring around the area.

He had it shipped to A stealer in Melb. After it was quoted for repair, he traded it on a new Deefer.

This bloke was pretty fussy on maintenance. He did a feel and visual before he left.

On mine, I have to remove it to be able to grease the centre support bearing. This is not a bad thing as a check is much more thorough when removed.
    Dave.

I was asked " Is it ignorance or apathy?" I replied "I don't know and I don't care."

What are you going to do, John? Upgrade or swap like for like?
I have a front shaft here, you can have; needs a uni.

    I rebuilt mine, today.
Two uni's into the double Cardon joint. $66.
Front uni had already been replaced with a greaseable unit.
    Ha! Don't call them names.
The uni's that come with grease nipples embedded in the main body of unit don't have enough space between the caps to get a grease gun on.
Next mission. Fit some extended grease nipples.

    Yep, mine did the same!

As the OP said, it could have been worse. :-)
