Interesting question. I'm about to do ball joints on mine and I ain't looking forward to it. I have considered if it would be easier to do the job with the axle on the bench. If I had a decent steel bench I probably would.
I don't foresee any major issues with doing the swap, provided the diff ratios are the same, and on a D2 they would be. It would be a heavy job so good jacks would be a must. A Nanocom would be handy to bleed the brakes. Obviously you'd need to do it twice if you need the wreck to roll.
Pay close attention to the condition of the font drive shaft while you're at it.
