Td5 cranks but does not start - Resolved

    Hi All,

My D2 Td5 has been daily driver for last few months and was running fine when parked last night. This morning it cranked and fired briefly (felt like it was less than a second) then cut out. It now cranks but does not fire. Nanocom shows no faults logged. Battery is good (12.9 volts), fuel is good, fuel pump runs, injectors can be heard actuating when tested via nanocom.

Any suggestions before I start digging into it on the weekend?

    Thanks,

    Charles

    crank position sensor.
leaking injector seals letting air into rail. Try priming system.

    Thanks Phillip,
It has been running beautifully with zero issues, so I don't think injector seals would fail that spectacularly. Have primed system several times with no change.

Given sudden failure I think CPS is likely culprit, although lack of fault code is surprising.

To me this seems like either air or combustion gasses in the fuel system. Three causes. Fuel tank empty, dead air bleed valve or one (or more) injector seals defective.

It's unlikely to be the crank position sensor - that will more often than not result in a MIL light and a fault code.

First thing to try is a purge - ignition on + five quick pumps of the throttle pedal to the floor and wait until it finishes. Then try cranking it with the pedal to the floor and see if it staggers into life. This may take 30 seconds of non stop cranking. Be aware that your battery needs to be fully charged for this sort of carry-on.

Currently I'm chasing down exactly the same behaviour. I'm doing the air bleed valve first and if that doesn't fix it I suppose it's time to do the injector seals again although they were done about 20k km's ago.

First thought is CPS, but that usually triggers the MIL.

Hi, the fact that you hear the pump doesnt mean it's delivering HP, it can work only on LP, do this test to rule it out Disco 2 - Check Td5 fuel pump HP | LandyZone - Land Rover Forum

What about the roll over switch, or does that cause no cranking at all?

Although on second thought, I think that would stop the fuel pump in case of fire.

    No start resolved

Thanks everyone for the suggestions - issue resolved and I feel like an absolute numpty!

Mark - thanks for commentary on priming process. I had completely forgotten it takes a solid 30 second crank and had not kept at it long enough. Vehicle is now running fine.

Lesson for me is not to come home after a long trip and park with less than quarter tank on sideslope.

    Thankyou to all who responded.

    Charles
