You need to remove the centre console and gearstick cover plate to see whats going on with the bias plate. I would bet the bias plate itself has failed. They're not expensive to buy.
My gear lever no longer sits between 3 and 4. more like 1 and 2. will this fix with adjustment or do I need a new bias plate springs or is this a suck and see event, Gearbox has 394K Km on it.
Do you have to remove the centre console to get access to the bias plate?
TIA

Depending on whats gone wrong, the old springs are probably fine.
Its the tab which is folded up on the bias plate which seems to break. They seem to fatigue.

Discovery LT77 and R380 bias plate, the folded vertical part of this often cracks off at the base and the gear stick will then fall from the correct 3/4 gate to the left and line up with the 1/2 gate.

If you'll be there anyway better get a FRC9985(gear change pivot bush) too which is under the bias plate cos even if it's not cracked it is definitely worn and pray that your problem to not be with the other one (FTC2203 = selector yoke) cos that's harder to replace

hey mate, when i rebuilt my r380 i had the same issue and mine was just a matter of loosing the bolts and moving the bias plate the the left or right. if not the integrity of the upright part on the plate isn’t great and can start to snap so that also could be ur issue. let me know how you go!
After looking around on line for this part, about $30.00 I rang MLR who charge $11 something, $12 something with GST. Some times it pays to go genuine from A Land Rover dealership.

SupporterYes,the weak spot on these is at the angle of the vertical turn up which you may find is distorted & fractured.
If you get stuck they can be reset & welded with a bit of reinforcing weld in the corner then they will probably last for years. Get it out & you will form your own opinion.
When the thing is made the upturn leaves minute cracks so it always was going to be a failure point. Any new one will show these cracks so seize the opportunity & weld it anyway. .

I replaced the broken bias plate in my r380 with a slick shift there not cheap but once done it is a permeant fix.
