Driving behind the 6HP and its close relationship to the 8HP as to locking the TQ quickly, basically it seems never to not be in direct drive. This does not kick down unless absolutely necessary or unlock the TQ whilst in gear. There is no comparison to the 4HP in driving operation.

With the 4.37 diffs and 32" tyres I have fitted, the Ashcroft calculator shows that I match a standard TD5 give or take a hundred rpm in top gear with the 8HP.

Basically it has got me thinking about cruising at 100kph with 2300RPM or dropping that down to around 1900 RPM with a change of ratio in the LT230 to the Ashcroft 1.003 gear.

IDEAL ENGINE FOR THE D2 ??
With the engine bay of the D2 requiring serious modification for the BMW M57 fitment, after driving a 3.0 V6 TDi Audi (VAG) which theoretically should fit 'easily' with a 60' angle against the Rover V8's 90' and offering 500Nm, this would be a cracker of vehicle!!!

This same engine is used in the VW Tourag, the Porches Cayenne and Audi Q7. The Q7 is around 2.3 tonnes and this engine with the 6HP still provides excellent performance. The updated version even comes with the 8HP and 550Nm but is not as highly regarded as to longevity /reliability as the earlier version.
I'm not sure how your diff ratios and tyre size matches, but I think they normally match the LT230 1:1 ratio with the M57's torque and power. I don't think the Td5 is anywhere near being close the power and torque of an M57. Mind you the 6HP and 8HP have a much wider spread of gear ratios compared to the 4HP if I recall correctly

I like your thinking with the VAG 3.0Tdi though. I'm already heavily invested into the M57/6HP route, but I think the VAG 3.0Tdi/8HP route would be far far better. I have this motor in my Audi Q5, in 180kw/580Nm factory spec with 7sp DSG and I think it is the most magnificent motor and the car is a rocketship! This I would love, but it hasn't been pioneered yet and it would be a far better fit under the bonnet as the M57 has so many fitment problems. I couldn't find anybody who has made it run as a standalone setup and I did wonder if it would intergrate with the Disco2 using the House of Torque M57/Disco2 integration unit.

For some reason I have it in my mind that the 6hp and 8hp don't always/usually pull away in 1st.. Can anyone comment on this?

Just looking at the ratio's and as I have the 4.37 Ashcroft diffs, essentially with the 1.003 I have one gear below the 4HP and one gear above which I think with the extra power of the VNT should work at least on the 110kph cruise if not available on the flat in top gear.

I have the 176kw in the C6 A6 Allroad and it is a cracker of an engine, smooth and very powerful. The 6HP is also well matched to the engine, the 6/8HP was available in the states with this engine let alone the availability here of any such drivetrains from a quattro here in AUs with this spec.

Syncro also have an adaptor that came up on their website recently for the LT230 - Audi/VW 4WD Auto to LT230 Adapter 6HP | Online Gearbox Parts Shop

This being the case, the CAN Io boxes are to my knowledge able to work with the VW / Porsche ZF units so making the integration possible. Certainly there are more M57 conversions out there than VAG

Yes in the Allroad, the auto starts off in 1st, it doesn't stay there long though!! The display always shows the mode and gear.

The software at least on the BMW boxes can be set with start in first or second.

So I thought this was an interesting comment from MWMachines. I wonder if there will be a trend away from using the BMW 8HP in conversions.

Lastly another cool project coming along to continue the Td5/8hp development and testing. James Watt's and Blackbird Industries have done a great job as always getting this protoype Td5-8 speed combination together using a Discovery 4 8HP rather than the usual BMW version which allows for a much shorter length overall when combining the gearbox, adaptors and LT230 than the BMW 8HP version. Looking forward to continue helping get the gearbox box set up and out racing to see what it can do!

Vw engines a 90°. although they are some of the shortest engines as Audi mounts them in front of the front wheels

    Indeed:

This engine was designed from scratch and had nothing familiar with the 2.5 V6 TDI. The 3.0 V6 TDI provides fantastic performance and consumes significantly less fuel than the 2.5 TDI. The engine is built around the cylinder block, which has a 90 deg V angle and manufactured from compacted graphite iron named CGI-450. This material provides a weight saving of 5 - 10 % in comparison with gray cast iron

THis is interesting, as I noted previously, it was incredibly difficult to find the lengths of the transmission so this is new information. Should have the actual measurements in the next couple of weeks.

The difference seems to be a the torque converter cover???

Looks like the back is different too and it doesn't look compatible with the normal 6HP/8HP to LT230 adaptors.

    Actually, here is the story:

That looks really good! I wonder if it works with the 6HP also. It'd be interesting to know the compatability with the Disco chassis also.
