    Automatic oil refill question ..

Hi all, decided to drop the oil today and refill, without changing the filter, it drained over night and I measured 5.5 litres came out , this was all done on flat surface while car was cold. Refilled the hole and I managed to put in only 3 litres.. before it started to come out, started the car let it go through all the gears, tried again to fill and I managed another 400 ml before it started coming out. I am 2 litres short, what are the tips as I never did this on discovery? I am assuming that tranny needs to suck up more oil and I am only guessing do I take off the filler plug, let the car run like that and just keep feeling as it needs more? Thankyou all

Was the car idling as you checked the level?

Hey mate, no I filled it up when the car was off then I started it and shifted all the gears.

Sorry for my ignorance but what I can see on the internet is once the first 2.5 / 3 litres are added cold , you must start it let it warm up and while someone is shifting the gears top it up while the car is running... is that correct?

It does make sense, auto sucks in more oil inside the gearbox from the bottom sump when it's running.

After what you've already done, just top it up with the engine idling... Should be good.

Before I can start the car for longer and do this, I need to fit back the cooling system.. almost there.

I've also saw on the forums that car should be idling in N while you are filling up the rest of the fluid in the box, apparently this way it will take in those additional 2 liters that I am missing.

    Does this sound right?

    Thank you.

do it while the engine and trans is cold while the engine is idling.

the correct level is when a bead of oil about 3mm in diameter is running out...

once thats done, degrease the oil cooler lines and then wipe them dry paying particular attention to the connectors from the hoses to the pipes for the cooler side connection....

take it on some very close to home short circuit runs untill the engine and trans have warmed up.

Do a very abbreviated stall test and then check the connections for any signs of oil.

Thank you very much Dave, it worked well all the missing fluid is now in!

I've put a new copper washer on the filler plug.

There is a small leak coming from it when the car is parked and it cools down.

    When it runs, nothing leaks.

My question is can I use some Teflon tape or even better some sealant around the thread to stop the small leak

    Your thoughts?

Thank you again for sharing the knowledge.
