Thread: D1 bar onto a D2

Clicked on this because I have just done it..... only I changed the REAR bar, which is definitely not a bolt straight on job. If nobody else chimes in I can go and take some pics and measurements of the ARB winch bars I have on my D1 and D2 for comparison a little later.

I am just going out to the cars to take some pics etc. But there is one thing to consider, and that is airbag compliance. My D1 has a driver's bag, but it was an option in 1994. Bags were mandatory for the D2, as 1999 was the year the Gov made them so on passenger vehicles.

Just a thought. Might impact on insurance and roadworthiness. My D1 is airbag compatible by 1994 standards.

The difference between the two cars is sufficient to make accurate measuring difficult without removing the bars. Not doing that! Also, both my cars have ARB bars, and they are quite different in their mounting, due to the airbag thing.

I'm not sure the mountings are different enough to account for that.

Having recently put my D2 bar on the son's D1, the chassis rails are the same distance apart, and the front 2 holes are the same. The difference between the chassis is that the front cross member is different, meaning that the D1 bars 3rd hole can't be accessed, and the bracket needs that bit cut off. Also, insurance may be an issue as the crush cans on the D1 bar are usually lighter. That said, my MCC bar that he is using is listed as being for D1 & D2 1989-2004.

Hmm, it is an air bag bar, but if the mounts are different, it’s going to be pain to make it work - regardless of any other implications.
I might have to see if anyone - for whatever reason - might like to swap, or see if a wrecker might do the same. 🤔

Interesting- I wonder if finding some D2 crush cans would solve the issue?
