    MAF Questions

My Td5 MAF crapped itself a few days ago on a trip through the high country.

Advice I got here was to disconnect it and run without it. This advice was good and the Disco ran great for the rest of the trip.

    So I have two questions.

1/ It runs fine without it, so why replace it?

2/My research is not to go aftermarket, genuine only. Just got off the phone to a stealer and it is no longer available.
Is a VDO brand ok to use?
    Dave.

I was asked " Is it ignorance or apathy?" I replied "I don't know and I don't care."

VDO has been the choice of smart Td5 owners for some years.

Disconnecting the MAF forces the use of a generic map, the MAF can fine tune the map.

If you google out MHK100620LR you'll see that it's still available in some places, those VDO which are sold as aftermarket/OEM didnt pass those hight requirements as to get the LR brand but still within specs so they can be as good as any other aftermarket made by reputable manufacturers. I compared new VDO with genuine LR on the same vehicle and the difference was noticeable even on live data while there was no obvious difference with VDO compared to cheaper Magnetti Marelli so my conclusion is that as long as it's not genuine LR any branded aftermarket is OK cos there is a huge variety of them and if you fit a genuine LR you'll feel a difference compared to how it's running with it unplugged while with an aftermarket you might not notice anything.

Is this standard tune only, changing to a tuned NNN on the 10P would the tune work better with the MAF?

    I've got a 10p with a tuned NNN.
Best thing I've done is to gut the MAF. Smashed it's guts out with a hammer and smoothed the rough edges with a die grinder.

No, afaik the 15P with MAF unplugged goes to a kind of 10P map which uses the MAP sensor inputs for fuelling, a 10P uses the MAF only for EGR otherwise it's useless, NNN remapped for 10P works the same like the original MSB depending on the version but i met cases when a 10P with the original MSB ran better than with remapped NNN. As long as you dont want to keep remapping the engine fitting NNN to a 10P IMO it's wasted money

Why would it matter what brand make anyway?
All these sensors would be using the same chip sets to run the show?

apart from a slightly different plastics die - they'd all be essentially the same
It's not like MAF sensor tech is some new frontier of engine control, she's a pretty mature and well sorted concept.

That kind of logic is applicable for almost all spare parts isn't it? cos they all are a well sorted concept IMO... so for example would you fit the cheapest unbranded engine mounts on your vehicle... or brake calipers? ... or you tell for which part it doesnt matter if it's branded or not.... beside the MAF off course

I did this and I did find a couple.

One of the sellers was Paddocks in the UK. However when I just went to there website they only listed aftermarket, go figure.

The Paddocks genuine was $400 delivered, which was about $100 more than VDO ones, so I ordered it.

Hopefully it will last as long as the original, 21 years.

My 10P MSB has shown an air flow fault since I've had a Nanocom. I deleted the EGR almost as soon as I bought the car. It runs great and gets better than 10/100 on a trip, highway of course. I never bothered to fix it.
