Is it local or easily accessible? An unregistered permit is under $100 and would enable a prolonged test drive.
Hi all,
Looking for a D1 or D2 for one of my sons. He is after a V8 in either auto or manual.
He will look at a D2 auto SE7 soon - just over 200,000k. My gut feeling is that it has been overheated - new radiator put in after cooling system 'problems', and we know how accurate the D2 dash gauge is... So, my boy cannot test it properly because it is no longer registered. Not a bad vehicle in terms of overall general condition - quite tidy in fact.
If you assume it is likely to either need head gaskets now or in the near future (and may have a bigger issue like crack in webbing between pots, and I am assuming that if it was going to slip a liner with the overheat it would have done it by now and I would hear it) what would you pay for it? No roadworthy, no proper way to test the cooling before buying (I can take a Nanocom and idling it up for 20 mins might tell me but unless it is really bad it may need to be driven to show up cooling issues).
Cheers

If you don't like trucks, stop buying stuff.
Thanks mate. I thought you could only get those for a vehicle you owned. There is insurance (property damage) to consider also and most/all insurers these days will not give cover notes and will only insure if it is your vehicle.
I think my lad will just need to take the risk, but valuing the vehicle is difficult. I would have thought about $4k but I might be off the mark.
Cheers
I would think any V8 would pull up at 4k, but it really depends on what people are prepared to pay, or sell for.

True mate. There are very few D2's for sale (V8's probably 10 or less in number), and the prices vary wildly from min' $6k to $13,500 at the moment (and the $13,500 has 270,000klm and is not a heavily modified vehicle). I have a very nice RR 3.9 GEMS V8 long motor here that he can have it it all goes bad.
Cheers

SupporterHandy little gadget to have for this(works on V8's) is one of the cheapy/cheapest bluetooth OBD dongles(eg. off ebay and other such sites).
Run Torq app on phone, connect via bluetooth to the dongle, and set some gauges . ie. primarily temp.
Even tho I had nanocom, it's duties were strictly TD5 centric, other than diagnostic-ing the V8(while it was running).
Back in the day the V8 idled with fine temps, but any attempt to drive it would see the OBD gauge fly up into the hundred in no time. It had either slipped or cracked liner or something that assisted in my killing of the engine.
Still got it, will fix it one day.
But the point here is that those really cheapo OBD dongles on ebay will work fine on the V8.
I actually have two now, lent one out, and needed it back, but got delayed in getting it back,, so just bought another, and then the original one came back to me again.
I think I paid $10ish, but they go for about $20 now. You can get them from local sources so if timing is OK and he can manage to get one quickly .. could be of some help.
.. hope that helps.
Arthur.
All these discos are giving me a heart attack!

Thanks Arthur. I agree. I have an Ultraguage running full time on my D2 and I have a wireless Bluetooth OBD2 dongle for my other vehicle using the Torque App on my phone. Magic setups the Bluetooth jobbies. The difficulty with the unregistered V8's is you cannot drive them to check to see if engine stress will open up a crack or force coolant out of a head gasket failure. Cheers

Do you know anyone with a trade plate?

Unfortunately not Ian. There are some other D2's coming up also around the same price that are low mileage TD5's. Given my young fella likes a challenge and studies mech engineering the diesel might interest him also. Cheers
