Thread: Jacked off

Went to use the jack one minute it was fine, next minute it will only raise the outer section until it's fully extended then the small section moves 20mm and stops and pump handle gets stiff, just won't budge? Never leaked, always lived in the battery box under the bonnet so i would notice if oil leaked. Anyone else had this problem?

I have had this happen a few times to too.

Has the jack been stored on it's side?....if so air can get in and cause the problem you describe.

You can purge the air out of the Land Rover jack :-

1/ pump the jack up as far as it wants to go

2/ open the release valve and manually push the ram down home

NB: initially the ram will resist efforts to push it home but it gets easier as you progress.

3/ repeat the process a number of times until the ram will fully extend when pumped, and readily push home with hand pressure.

4/ if full function returns check the oil level, topping up if necessary AND store the jack upright and never have the problem again.

5/ if full function does not return then re-build it or replace it!

6/ and of course never have any part of tyour body under the vehicle when it is supported solely by the jack

PS: likely no help now but a decade ago there was an AULRO member selling a profesionally manufactured bracket to secure the jack in an upright position - I bought one for $15 I think......
