    Sump Gasket

Having removed my sump I was toying with the idea of using a silicone sealant instead of a gasket.

Permatex "Right Stuff" looks like it would work

My only concern doing this is the clearance required between engine and sump, due to sump also bolting to the transmission bell housing.

    Anyone done it?

I was asked " Is it ignorance or apathy?" I replied "I don't know and I don't care."

I did try this. I elongated the 4 holes in the bell housing. I filled it with oil and have run it with no leaks.

Still on my hoist as I have other things that need doing.

Before I filled it I went to tighten the sump plug and guess what, it just tore out the thread.

So off to the nut and bolt shop for a $125 helicoil kit.

I will report back after 6 months to see if it leaks, but I am confident that if it is not leaking from the start it will last.

    This is what I used

Just saw this. I had an indie take my sump off to check the oil pump bolt. He used RTV on it and it’s been fine. Rear main, not so much

Did they just use it on its own without a gasket? If so, due to the sump now being a tad closer to the engine, the 4 bolts that come through from the bell housing wont line up.

I had to elongate the holes.

Good question. I don't know for sure.
