    Oil Viscosity

    So I've had ~7000kms on my last service in which i used Penrite HPR Diesel 5w-40, on recommendation of many forum posts/threads id read here. I did notice the car (TD5) was a bit noisier/rattlier, especially on cold, so from the beginning had thought that previously it had had a thicker oil. I then noticed yesterday that on LRA's website, their service kits/lists for D2 TD5 recommend 15w-40.

    My question is - with a TD5 at 180,000kms, what would you be using? Why do LRA recommend something different to everyone here? My D2 was serviced religiously at LR and a rover shop in Sydney, if that makes any difference to working out whether it had a thicker oil. I understand LR probably recommends a thinner oil but the indy would have it's own preference (it's a pretty well renowned shop)

    LR doesn't recommend thinner oil. They do for cold(-20) type climates. They have a recommendation range. For moderate climates like Aus(except alpine areas of course) they recommend 10W40. For hot climates they recommend up to 10W60 oil too.(as per RAVE)

    IIRC, 5W40 is usually a full synthetic, and if you don't mind the added cost, just keep using that, nothing wrong.

    I see. I was planning on 10w-40 for my next service, just as the added noise of the engine worries me when hearing it!

    According to Penrite they recommend HPR 5w40 semi synthetic no substitute allowed.

    Ive been using this for the last 10+ years with no issue but yes does sound a little rattly, but that is normal with the Td5

    Been using Nulon 10w-40 heavy duty semi synthetic oil for many years no problems
