Question Ignition problem with Key Disco 01

    Hey all

ok our disco 2001 has been having an issue with turning the key in the ignition, sometimes it just wont turn with out a lot of stupid key bloody thing....grrr... jiggle jiggle pull key out push key in jiggle jiggle slide a bit out then in again with a bit of jiggle jiggle going on......bingo key turns and away we go... hooraaa!!!!!

it seems to me to be ware and tear with the key and or key chamber\barrel.

whilst its a only an every now and again thing and dosn't really worry me it annoys and stress the better half big time, so is time to get it fixed.

The better half swears that if you get in and lock the doors (button on key)and set the alarm off by moving you can then turn the key and start the car!!!! I haven't seen this in action so not sure of what actually happens

This leads me to believe maybe there is some sort of electrical\mechanical lockout thing happening with the alarm thats not working correctly ??????? dunno

I have a quote of $800+labor for a complete barrel, keys too maybe but the lads recommended to head over the locksmith guys around the corner and get a new key cut from them, from what I understand its a new key from some geewhizz system that cuts the key as if its a brand new key and not a copy of my old one.

Anyone else had a similar problem or can make any recommendations

    thanks in advance

    Steve

It will be wear and tear on the key and the barrel. It is not uncommon, if you look at the surround where the key goes in you will probably see lots of small metal filings.

The only correct repair is replacement of the barrel and key. A locksmith might be able to do a temporary repair, but in my experience it probably won't last long.

    key problems

yes I kinda figured I will be up for a replacement keys and barrel.

Redback my location is canberra so if your nearby let me know

I found a complete new barrel and key kit from a site in the US of A and converting back to aussie dollars it was going to be about $520 with out shipping.

so I am hoping to find a different supplier.

Does anyone know if the new keys have the remote door locking bit on them or will we end up with a working key and a non working key on the keyring

Just out of curiosity - have you checked the tightness of the whole barrel assy onto the collumn.

I had issues with mine, pretty much as you describe, when I stripped the column / shrouds off I found the whole mechanism was loose !!!

Obviously I couldnt tighten it more as the bolts that are used are sheer bolts, but they tapped out easy enough with a centre punch.

I bought two new sheer bolts, replaced the old ones - and never had a problem since.

I am not saying that this is your issue, but it may be worth checking first.

I had the same problem with my ignition due too the key being to worn i had some new keys cut by a locksmith by giving them the drivers side door lock and problem solved i have also since found the original factory key cut code on a label stuck on the top of the steering column under the dash .

    Hi

Give The Toorak Tractor Co. in Braeside (03 95872866, Melb.) a try.

    New and second hand parts.

Always been a good option for me.

    Not so fast Disco Cally

I had the same problem on my D1 and it was getting worse. Took it in this weekend to the local locksmith who tightened it all up. Now its like a new one.

But its not all good news, the Lockie said that they generally get one maybe two repairs on a L/R ignition, then the only option is the replacement (but when that time comes I should (!) have been able to budget for the $$$$$ repair)

So you might want to ascertain whether the barrels been adjusted before, if it hasn't you may get a few months reprive before you have to dig deep and get a replacement.

(BTW the repair cost me $55.00 and took about an hour)

    Cheers

    repairs

I have been doing some ringing around and this mob British Four Wheel Drive - Land Rover & Range Rover Parts Specialist if I remember correctly said what you can do is buy a series 1 disco barrel and have it rekeyed to suit your current keys ... and problem fixed, apprently they have done this a number of time in thier workshop for D2 customers.

The cost of the D1 barrel is about $270ish.. or was it $217???? cant remember the excat price but its a lot cheaper than a D2 kit at $500-700+

Ta for the tips, I will give the repair ago first and see how we travel from there.

more to come as I will be booking the truck in this week

    cheers
    Steve
